The starfleet crew on DS9 gets an updated uniform design during season 5 from 'First Contact'.

Do you think this might have had something to do with separating DS9 and VGR?
When DS9 began they got a new uniform design, different than the ones in TNG. Was that also a way to make sure DS9 looked like a different series?

And the question, which do you like better?

If I got to make the choise, I would've kept the original uniforms. They were more.... well, Starfleet.

I like the more colourful early uniforms that Voyager continued using (and Picard essentially updates with the ST'09-style arrowhead texturing). The First Contact ones suited that movie but they were quite drab on an already very drab space station.

Plus, they had so many layers:lol: A thick vest under the heavy jacket with a shirt beneath that? What temperature did they keep DS9 at?

I doubt it, given that DS9 and VOY originally started off with the exact same uniforms. They could have made them look like different shows from the get-go if they wanted. I think the change up a year later had more to do with DS9 being concurrent with the TNG movies--eventually the entire fleet had the new uniforms. However, with the Voyager lost in the Delta Quadrant and cut off from the Federation, it made sense for them to still wear the older uniforms, IMO. Even after later being aware that there were new uniforms, it was still logical for the Voyager crew to keep the older design as it may have then become a unifying element for the Starfleet and former Maquis on the ship.

As far as my preference, the later uniforms without a doubt. Much more a unified, cohesive appearance but still retaining a nod to the three primary branch colors with the undershirt and sleeve piping.

Originally I would have said the later "5+movies" unis because I like the various different ways they could be worn and wished they'd used these more, but the style of the Picard uniforms meshes better with the DS9/VOY uniform and the Cadet Service Uniforms (bar the Red Squad/Valiant Special Uniform) worn during both eras.

Latter DS9 looks more cinematic (remaster please Paramount) but the DS9\VOY uniforms look more colorful.
Agreed.
Back when it came about, the FC uniforms felt "newer" and "cooler". In Star Trek Online, I prefer putting characters into that uniform over the DS9 one because the shoulder texture makes it look more interesting.

Interestingly, the color palette of the FC uniforms also looks good on the DS9 uniform.

(I wish VOY would've changed into the newer uniform as well, though I understand the real-world reason of keeping the two shows visually apart.)

I'm not going to vote either way but I DO LIKE that they DID change the uniforms. That doesn't mean I like the "First Contact" uniforms over the DS9/VOY uniforms. I don't like one over the other, it's just that I'm kind of feeling like it would've felt bland and tacky if they wore the same uniform types for all 7 seasons.

For some reason though, I also find it interesting how "Rapture" was actually the first episode with the cast wearing the "First Contact" uniforms when "Rapture" wasn't even Season 5's premiere... that the uniform switch was a mid-season thing. But i guess I like the uniform switch because then we got to see what the DS9 cast (who wore standard Starfleet uniforms) look like in them whereas the Voyager crew wore the same uniforms throughout its entire 7-year run only because they were stranded in a faraway quadrant and I would've liked to have seen what they looked like with the "First Contact" uniforms (although Katherine Janeway wore one in Star Trek: Nemesis) as well as the TNG-style uniforms.

No contest - the grey shoulder uniforms are fantastic-looking costumes. When you consider they debuted in First Contact a quarter of a century ago it makes them all the more amazing, because they still look fresh as a daisy in my opinion.

I always wondered why Starfleet change their uniforms so often. I thought it was Starfleet and not some fashion company.
Starfleet seems to be in a constant state of change. Nothing may reflect the continually evolving nature of Starfleet to the public better than their uniforms, IMO. Some uniforms could be in service for decades (like the ones in Star Treks II-VI), while other designs could only be around for a few years.

It's even possible that the outbreak of so many threats to the Federation in the late 2360s/early2370s prompted Starfleet to go for a more unified and less color-driven design with the "First Contact" uniforms.

It’s hard to vote because I actually liked both. Maybe slightly prefer the initial uniforms because they were created just for DS9 and had a little more colour. Sisko, however, suited the FC style uniform much more.
