TOS was often a horror show, and this time they use psychological warfare instead of something more visually disturbing:

Simulated attacks leading to real deaths.

Scotty's subplot about diplomacy is a tad cynical for his character, but Doohan makes it feel authentic.

David Opatoshu really goes into overdrive to sell the layers of complexity Anan7 has, and within the span of 45 minutes. He's very effective. Anan comes across legitimately sincere in his actions and remorse; no double crossings or underlying mustache twirling in a grand super-big epic attempt to take over Vendikar, moo-ha-ha-ha-ha. This is indeed a refreshing episode.

The use of the fictional technology had not been fully fleshed out by this point, though I like the use of "screens" instead of a lengthy discussion on deflector dish's sonic barrier being the reason Eminiar's sonic weapons (not the usual pew pew blasters or torpedoes) didn't trash and turn into the ship into Enterprise puree.

Kirk destroys a computer, but this time it's with a phaser and not nagging it to death with a repeating loop via voice interface. But with TOS, computers (all except for the ship and Spock) were metaphor for big evil things (typical for several 1960s and 70s shows) and I'd say "camped up" except "campy" implies an intentionally humorist bent where TOS played it all straight...)

Definitely worth a viewing, even if by 1990s standards it's pacing is a tad leisured.

One of season 3's attempts to add a new antagonist, in the visage of a psychedelic spider, it's a shame the Tholians never made a return in TOS.

The episode hangs together despite some glossing and nitpicks, as it hinges on the character drama - which is handled great.

It also is used for a certain ENT episode, where the ship is hurled through time as well as space, in a way that oddly doesn't create a paradox.

It may be the TNG episode that comes closest to feeling like an episode of the original Twilight Zone (which I love) and it's a great showcase for Jonathan Frakes as an actor. It's way down there, but I've got to do #78 "Crossover" next -- they just NAIL this one. There were SO many ways to go wrong with a return to the MU (most of which were demonstrated by subsequent MU episodes), but "Crossover" dances over them all. It's an episode that must have been very hard to get right, executed in a way that feels effortless. I love that the focal character pairings are Kira/Bashir (rarely paired together for stories) and Kira/Intendant Kira. Those are some dynamic character relationships!

I just noticed The Siege of AR-558 on the list. A great DS9 episode that was pretty much their war film. I loved Quark's role as the moral compass, especially when poor Nog has his leg blown off.

When Sisko and the crew turn up at the station and see just how badly the war has affected the people stuck there, it really brought it home.

#51 "Once More Unto The Breach" is one of those stealth great episodes, it's another one that packs an emotional wallop everytime. I feel like it's much-commented upon that "It's Only A Paper Moon" is focused on two guest stars, but no one ever makes the same observation of this episode, which is all Kor & Martok! I think it disguises itself as a Worf episode a bit, but Worf really does almost nothing of substance in the story, the actual arc is all Kor/Martok.

Alright, another round before turning in. I'll go with Soldiers of the Empire. A cracking great DS9 episode and the closest Star Trek has come to an entirely Klingon episode. Yeah, Dax has a semi-major role - and the rest of the cast get in their paychecks. But it's really about Worf, Martok, and the crew of "Klingon losers" who all have distinctive personalities despite all being culturally Klingon. It's my go-to episode when I want to prove to people that Berman-era Klingons are not all one note.
