Was Kirk justified in killing Kruge?

Here's the scene. If someone I offered to save grabbed me by the ankle to haul me down with him, I'd kick him in the head, too. Klingon bastard.

Well Bob the discount Klingon did get his in the end.. Very in klingon like douche nozzle..

But.. Saving an enemy's life can go to far.. Take Batman.. He arrested joker countless times, but he broke out and killed and mamed over and over again.. Sorry if I was Batman.. Id shatter every single bone, or he'll put a bullet in the head and go sound asleep.. Because some people.. Just need to die..

Well, that is one of the moral quandaries: if you don't murder someone are you to blame for all the murders they later commit?
In reality it's rarely that straight forward. In fiction it can be.

When you get to this point, you need to stop reading comic books.

@FormerLurker i actually don't read them.. Mostly watch the cartoons :vulcan:
I do believe in Kirk's way, give peace a chance, even in dire circumstances.. Even Batman no kill policy ( which if I was reading the comics.. Didn't exist till the 90s and the cartoon introduced it.. )
Just like Kruge.. Give them the chance but if they don't want it or are still trying till kill you.. Then owell..

There's been a version of it in place at least since the days of Adam West. That's one of the more shocking things in the two Tim Burton films, was Batman's willingness to kill. He'd been unwilling to do that in the comics for as long as I had been reading them (since the '60s). Indeed, it was a major plot point when Ras Al Ghul was introduced, that Batman wasn't as ruthless as Ras wanted him to be.

Gotham or moreso whatever U.S state it is located in, is probably more to blame for Joker continually escaping and killing than Batman is. Institutionalised corruption in the Gotham justice system for example, is a major reason for why supercriminals get back on the streets. Giving out death sentences to supervillains isn't who Batman is. He makes a conscious effort to treat his villains like human beings (which is why he often refers to them by their real names instead of the monikers) and it's specifically for the reason of maintaining his humanity.

I find it unKirk-like that he would murder Kruge in such a callous manner. I always thought Kirk would look for even the slightest spark of possible redemption in his enemies and act accordingly.

Kruge was pathetic and helpless at this point.

Anyone else disappointed that Kirk gave in to anger instead of being more reasonable as we are accustomed to?

Not at all.

Dude killed his son. Kirk was pissed.

The end.*

*Except: I also wasn't dismayed by Spock wanting to kill the Romulans at the end of ST2009. His whole fucking planet!**

Kruge's crew unintentionally mass murdered dozens of Starfleet officers onboard the USS Grissom and Kruge ordered the murder of an unarmed Federation citizen, in a time of relative peace with the Klingons, so of course Kruge and his crew mostly got what was coming to them.

Kirk is basically telling Kruge to look around; it's quite obvious there nothing to salvage on Genesis but the idiot still wants to fight??? Kirk still has the presence of mind when he had the high ground to try to save Kruge's meaningless life... in return Kruge attempts to drag him down??? I had no problem with Kirk putting that idiot out his misery.

Then owell..
Oh well. It's just death...

Sorry, it's just such a cavalier attitude towards it. I mean, I have no issues with killing in self-defense and I don't call it murder. But, Kirk's was still strange to me, even in the context of Kruge trying to kill him in the process.
