Seems simlar to the Luna class.. size wise, and that is 450 meters, which is bigger than an Intrepid but way smaller than a Galaxy or soverign.. and compared to the romulan birds, those are probably not bigger than 200 meters, quite small, and Orders of Magnitude smaller than the normaly huge romulan ships..

My thing is why wasn't the romulan fleet Cloaked?? I mean, they could have done like ST 5 with the bird of prey cloaking when it got closer?? Maybe??

The feddy ships are probably patrol craft, well armed, fast, etc. Copellious is probably close to the old Romulan neutral zone, which you have dozens of patrol ships in the area, maybe a number at starbases in the area that are a "Ready Fleet" to respond to any funny stuff..

I know Chambon isn't a "Starship Porn" guy.. but he does need to realize that it IS a thing and he does need to pay attention to the ships, doesn't have to be a fanservice extravaganza.. but just acknowledge it!

Romulan cloaking has often been "absolutist": while a Klingon might raise his shields or warm up his death rays while still under cloak, Romulans won't even use transporters out of fear of weakening the cloaking effect. So when they commit to action, they emerge from cloak and stay emerged.

Since the fleet was going to challenge the Coppelius planetary defenses anyway, why sneak in? The moment the firing began, there would be no advantage to being invisible, or to having been invisible.

We may wonder why Oh's folks didn't open fire at the planet itself earlier on. Perhaps Oh/Nedar didn't quite believe that the planet only had one house she needed to destroy, and was waiting for better targeting data?

I think two giant fleets exemplifies "starship porn."

Personally, I have no issue with Riker having one multi-function class at his disposal.

@Timo I don't think they knew what was going to happen over the planet, what defenses. Hell, it may have been a synth armada, so going in cloaked and recon the area would make sense to me, Hell, they could have come in cloaked, scanned the planet at there leisure, then lock weapons, DeCloak and fire 2 seconds latter before any defenses could have been raised... or if the orchids were in the air, she could have had like 50 ships go around and fire at the planet.
then they recloak and run off

Two giant fleets just sitting there with a grand total of two designs between them, and camera angles and framing so bad that they barely leave any impression on the viewer.

This new Trek doesn't care about starship porn, but frankly, the designs are so bad, who can blame them. That monstrosity Eaves designed for the finale was a real low point.

The showrunners/Secret Hideout are obsessed with this thinking that filling the screen with stuff makes that scene memorable and compelling. It doesn't. I wish they would stop. It didn't work in season 2 opener of Discovery, it definitely didn't work in that ludicrous season 2 finale, and it didn't work in the Picard finale. Not exclusive to Trek, Rise of Skywalker fell in the same trap (but JJ has even less of a clue how to do space action than anything on New Trek, don't get me started how bad he is at it)

If they toned down the ultra, ultra wide angle lens in those fleet shots, that demolishes detail, it might make a better impression but they have to show HOW MANY SHIPS THERE ARE OMG!!!

Yes, it is (multirole), but I do not think the we will see more in the way of the F-35. The Navy meanwhile has it's own issues with this. The Navy was sold on low manning and modular ship design for some years. Both were amazingly costly examples of BS. If you count in the roles of the USN, MSC and USCG, it is hard to significantly reduce the number of ship types.

Ships & Aircraft are different beasts. Just like Shuttles / StarFighters and entire StarShips are different beasts.

The way they went about doing Multi-Role Ships was fundamentally bone headed.

But anyways, back to the core discussion of Star Trek StarShip designs.

Yeah, JJ & his lackeys aren't the right people for these franchises IMO.

No doubt budget limitations played a big role here. My hope is that the Eavesian aesthetic will be shitcanned at some point. But no matter who designs them, a very tight budget will certainly limit the quality.

He's good when working on his original IP's, but I don't like it when he touches existing IP's.

John Eaves needs to start designing StarShips of a different Era and different Aesthetic.

Kurtzman, yeah I can live without him either.

Kurtzman was only good when he had Robert Orci working with him as a tandem.

i've said it before, i'll say it again: someone new.

there's a reason (love them or hate them) that the kelvin timeline ships are distinct, they were designed by people who hadn't worked in the franchise before and they had a clean slate. i like eaves' work in discovery and picard, but it's all variations on prior eaves work, there's nothing truly new there.

there's a reason (love them or hate them) that the kelvin timeline ships are distinct, they were designed by people who hadn't worked in the franchise before and they had a clean slate. i like eaves' work in discovery and picard, but it's all variations on prior eaves work, there's nothing truly new there.

Ryan Dening is one of the people newly hired who never worked on the franchise before. He designed the NCIA-93, for instance.

and i'm really appreciative of his work. the stealth ship is a pretty fresh design and his redesign of the D7 is faithful and interesting. so yeah, more of that.

Many fans dislike the Kelvin timeline ships. Myself included.
