Donny's Klingon Stuff

How's everyone else doing with everything?

You know, I hadn't realized Donny's threads were such a Bay Area social club (deep in the heart of Silicon Valley, for me). We should have a meet-up!

Oh, right...

At this point, I'm quite convinced that I should've started working from home months ago. I'm... oh, how to describe it... more-or-less a render technician, so a lot of my office-time is spent waiting for one batch of processing-jobs to finish so I can move the output to where it goes and set up the next batch. I can get a lot more done for myself and for work by taking care of my own business during the time I'd normally be raptly watching a constellation of progress bars and console output half-hoping something might go wrong so I'll have something to do, and kicking off one last set of operations technically after I've done my eight hours. I'll have to have a talk with my boss once the crisis is over about keeping this going long-term. Assuming, of course, that my contract outlasts the crisis.

I haven't quite adjusted to the new normal yet (I'm mostly enjoying getting more sleep), but I'm hoping to get back to 3D work soon. I don't think anything Trek-related is near the top of my list, though they're on there. I think I've got enough reference to take a good whack at the V'Ger interior chamber, I need to pick out an Enterprise-Refit model to resurface in Lightwave's PBR system at some point, and I've also got that TOS-ified Discoprise I started out on before I got disappointed by Discovery's second season finale.

Strange, I remember learning about AUs in grade school. Maybe somebody else skipped the day that was taught?

Many states in the U.S. have completely different textbooks, so what's taught in Kansas ain't what you get in New Jersey, let alone outside the country.

Oakland, here. I've been trying to meet up with Donny for coffee or something for a while but our schedules haven't coincided when I am (typically) in San Jose weekly. Not now, though!

Never been to Kansas...

However, my jokey anecdote does refer to semi-rural Texas in the 60s and 70s, so I would think the bar would be considered low.

I don't believe I have a greater-than-average knowledge of astronomy.

Would you prefer it if it was measured in kilometers, or light minutes, or whatever the heck a parsec is?

Maybe when this is over and we can walk freely again, I'd love to see if you all want to get together to try that board game of mine I was cooking up for a while. Yeah, it got shot down shortly after I posted it but I'm starting to not care whether it gets published or not... I set out to make the board game experience I wanted that no other tabletop (or computer, really) experience provided, because none existed. When I have a clearing through all of the things I'm doing I really want to finish this latest mechanics update to make it playable again and get it to the table. I think you guys might enjoy it.

Plenty of time to work on it until this resolves. If you guys are still interested I may open up another thread to focus on it. Of my projects, few held my attention as long as this game proto (which is part of the reason why I want to get back to it, honestly).

I will confess part of why Donnie's Klingon bridge has my attention is because I don't know if the finished art could use some nice snapshots of the bridge. Klingons are an eventuality, and I'd love for the K't'inga bridge to be that artwork.

Donny - here's a fresh shot from Trekcore that I've never seen.

That's what I thought. It's been a long time since I listened to the original soundtrack, but I thought I remember that score with the pipes. I dunno - honestly can't remember clearly.

So I admit that "working" in such a dark, dank environment such as the K't'inga bridge has lost it's appeal due to the quarantine and my depression and anxiety ramping up as a result. I've still got this project on my mind, but may need to switch to something more clean and bright for a bit. I had no motivation to work on it over the weekend, and was delighted instead by taking screenshots and videos of my clean and polished Refit Enterprise engineering sets. I apologize for those looking forward to progress but I'm just going to regroup for a few days and see if there's something that working on would lift my moods a bit better.

How's everyone doing out there?

I'm still adjusting to the whole "working remotely" thing. I'm also worried about my parents' health (while they're generally healthy, they're still over 65, so they're at greater risk by default), so I'm doing the shopping for them and trying to keep them at home as much as possible. I'm kind of an introvert, so the not going out hasn't really hit me yet, but it will eventually.

If you want to do something really bright and shiny, you could always work on re-decorating the bridge for its configuration at the end of Voyage Home. ;)

Do what you need for your own mental health Donny. It's part of why I bounce around projects so much myself. You have to be able to keep yourself going. This will always be here when you're ready.

Doing great. Thanks for asking. I was born for this! You say social distancing, I say high school! (Kids are getting a liiiitle stir crazy.)

TWOK era shuttle bay? TFF shuttle bay that doesn't make me want to cut myself?

JJ bridge? That's bright! (Stupid but bright.)

Regrettable that the novelty of the hardly-depicted bridge isn't enough... but I hear you on atmosphere leaking into your mood. As it is I find I've changed gears of my own projects... mentioning it int his thread just the other day has brought me back to that Trek game of mine with the motivation of making it playable again.

All things considered I'm doing okay. My wife and I are still keeping an eye on hospital rules for support people... trying to find out if I'll be present to see my Son enter the world or not. We've got two months to go, but we don't know how long the isolation is going to last...

If I may... I'm still looking forward to the Star Trek 4 Enterprise-A sets, and it may be a good subject to turn to. Not only are those sets the brightest permutation of the TMP set... but seeing the Enterprise-A at the end of 4 was such a highlight for so many things being reborn (Spock's life, Kirk's Captaincy, a second chance for Earth, a second life for Gillian). Perhaps it's the optimism some of us could use right now.

Not all of the references would or could be there, but I'd say get started and see where it takes you. That old set will be honored either way for the attention you give it, since it's so often overlooked by others modeling these trek sets.

Makes perfect sense, Donny. Do what you need to do. After all, you're not getting paid for this work. If it's not fun, no need to force yourself to do it.
