Babylon 5

However, I can see why the distrust of Sheridan would happen. And of telepaths in general. I don't think I could ever fully trust a telepath.

That’s an interesting statement.

I can see being wary of telepaths but even somebody you know personally who have proven themselves?

It gets to an interesting topic, how do we really treat a person with an advantage? Where is the line where our belief in individual freedoms loses out to our pure risk averse self preservation.

I wrote a webcomic where the heroes protected a genetically engineered shapeshifter assassin so I think it’s a very interesting debate without a clear answer.

it's available via neflix dvd
...in the US, presumably. I also have it on DVD and I'm amazed by how rewatchable it is - despite the subpar music and signs of studio interference. It helps to watch it in a viewing order other than how it was originally broadcast. Unfortunately, there is no consistently best order. I follow JMS's suggested order.

I have been trying to re-watch all 5 seasons of the show. And I found out for some strange reason the Disc 3 from my season 1 set no longer works! Nothing wrong that I could see. No scratches or anything. So odd. So I am having to get the set from our library to see if their Disc 3 works. So Disc 3 is: Deathwalker, Believers, Survivors, and By Any Means Necessary. I could live without Believers. But I don't recall the B plots on these shows. So I need to see if I can watch them from the library. Really a shame about my set though :( Anyone else have that happen?

Disc 3 in my set plays but it always freezes and skips a a scene in Survivors.

There are a lot of bad B5 discs out there. Season 4 disc 2 (I think) sticks out. I've come across multiple bad copies of that one.

My season 5 disc one did that to me a few times, but then I tried it in another dvd player and it was fine.

Do you have another one you can try it in?

CDs and DVDs do deteriorate with age. I've had a couple older (and probably cheaper) discs act like they were scratched even with no visible damage.

It can depend on the player's inbuilt error-correction software. Best bet if no player is working is to try it in a PC-based DVD player as these are often most up-to-date.

I’d prefer it if my disc skipped that episode entirely. :nyah:

All kidding aside, I ditched my discs several years ago and purchased B5 digitally on iTunes since I have an Apple TV.

I find my PS3 will also play discs that have DVD-rot. There have been a few really bad ones (and really these are ones where I can see clear daylight through holes)that it won’t play, but otherwise it’ll play just about any disc.

Thanks for all the interest. I did try it on a dvd player and also in the built in "dvd" in our tv. But no good.( All the other dics work)
I have to share a funny thing that just happened to me. Our library a few times a year has sales on books and dvds and such. So I thought I would go and try my luck. When I found for $5 a season one set of B5 set 3. I was so happy. Then I saw it was in Chinese! Yeah, I didn't get it. But so funny the set I needed and not in English. Oh, well! Laugh at life. At least I got to watch the set the library lent me. And in English! I could live without Deathwalker and Believers. But not without Survivors and By Any Means Necessary. I love the "b plot" on By Any Means Necessary-Mollari and G'Kar fighting over religious items, so fun!!

Guess this is the best place to put my thoughts down. Though I watched Babylon 5 off and on during its first run I had never seen a great deal of Season 1. So, I finally sat down and worked my way through it. During the B5 vs. DS9 war I was DS9 all the way, though I still remember being impressed a lot with Seasons 3-5 of B5. I also liked Crusade and loved In the Beginning.

After finishing Season 1, I think my estimation of it is higher than it was when I saw bits and pieces of it in the '90s. I like Sinclair more than I did then, and thanks to the other threads I got my question answered about why Michael O' Hare left the series. Very sad.

On DVD, the cinematography holds up for the most part, but the special effects aren't super great, but I chalk it up as being something that makes this show its own thing. I liked the B5 uniforms though costuming overall was iffy. I'm also not super impressed with the alien makeup across the board. However, I have always been impressed with the Narn and I also have no problem with the Minbari and Centauri, so with them being the major alien races it's not too big a deal. I also think the Drazi makeup was well done. I also wasn't a big fan of the starship design, but once again, the kind of techno-organic feel to many of the starships make them stand out.

I do like how the show explored religion, politics, and even labor disputes. I liked how JMS dealt with Earth religions more than what we see in Trek, which is almost nonexistent. I think the B5 vision of future humanity felt more realistic than what we got with Roddenberry-Berman 24th century Trek. Also, I hadn't realized that the dark overtones that would manifest in later seasons were there in the first season.

Though that the tense to antagonistic relationship between Sinclair, Garibaldi, and to a lesser extent Ivanova when it came to dealing with Earth made me wonder why they would've been put in charge of Babylon 5. It was explained with Sinclair, though I can't see someone with as sketchy a past as Garibaldi being given that job (I guess Sinclair really put his foot down there), and while Ivanova seems more acceptable, her vocal contempt for the Psi Corps seems like that would've disqualified her. I also had questions about why Earth was in charge of the station when it was something the major races all had a role in. I mean, Earth law was, if not 100% predominant, very much followed. It seems like this should've been a mixed crew, but that would've made it too similar to DS9 I suppose. Absent that, I think the series needed an Earth ambassador. Another thread mentioned BSG's Roslin and Adama, but I also think of Stargate: Atlantis's Dr. Weir and Shepherd. The set up for why Starfleet was in charge of DS9 made more sense to me.

In the first season JMS seemed to keep returning to the theme of legacy and also had a focus on ancient, super races. I know that he will build on the ancient races thing later on, but here he's planting the seeds.

All in all, a good start. There were some episodes I liked a lot more than others. Some seemed unnecessary, though I imagine some of those also had seeds planted in them. The character work was strong and JMS did a good job of fleshing out the main cast, or giving them personalities or quirks, something to make them memorable.

Actually the DVD’s and even modern widescreen broadcast/streaming versions are the worst. While B5 was always meant to be seen in 16:9 widescreen, the SPECIAL EFFECTS were done in 4:3 NTSC in the 90’s. The original idea was to have the CGI and composite scenes redone in the future when computing power fell in price. Unfortunately Warner Brothers lost the files for all the CGI, except one star fury. However, during the series run the CGI could’ve been rendered in 480i NTSC Widescreen, for an extra $75 an episode, but certain producers convinced WB to go with a hack version, where they cropped the 4:3 NTSC masters, by taking a 16:9 picture out of the Center of the 4:3 picture and blowing it up to widescreen. But the worst thing is that at the same time they went to 576i PAL Widescreen! (The live-action was transferred from film at 576i PAL resolution.) And all DVD’s and streaming/broadcast widescreen masters are derived from those PAL Widescreen masters (with the exception of “The Gathering” & “Crusade”).

Really in 2020, the best versions of the series still available are the Columbia House VHS, as Columbia House released every episode of B5. WB did do commercial VHS & Laserdisc releases, the releases were done in an odd way where all of Seasons 1 & 5 were released, 1/2 of both Seasons 2 & 4, while Season 3 went unreleased. But all these releases were mastered from the 4:3 NTSC (or in PAL territories 4:3 PAL masters) broadcast masters that aired in the 90’s.
