Picard=The Cage

I kind of don’t like Rios and it may be the acting. His multiple personalities are fun, but they are supposed to be. I don’t feel an adult grit and edge in the performance of Rios himself. The look is there, but the actor doesn’t do it for me.

Laris and Zhaban have a subtlety and indirect charm that make them more intriguing.

Jurati I think is in part (by design or not) an indictment of the surface-level niceness and excellence of the Federation characters. She’s highly intelligent yet speaks charmingly colloquially. The actress’s delicate and slippery performance makes her interesting to watch.

For me it's different. Jurati is sometimes annyoing - or scenes involving her. Nothing against the actress.

I’m watching the last episode:

And I say, they pull a Cage and scrap the ENTIRE supporting cast.

Bring back Patrick Stewart, and his roommates.

Rios, Raffi, Jurarti are all cookie cutter stereotypes.

Wipe them out. ALL of them.

Someone help me out here. I want to like the crew, I don’t have a problem with the actors. So what the hell is it? Why is it that I loved the Romulan roommates, while I’m having such a tough time with the crew? Something is just not jibing with me.

In The Cage, I liked Pike and Boyce, enough that—-in an alternate reality—- I would not mind seeing an entire season of Pike adventures with Jeffrey Hunter. But it’s absolutely undeniable that Kirk and McCoy were radical improvements.

Maybe it’s not the actors, maybe it’s the writing, or maybe it’s a combination of both? Either way, I’m finding a certain natural chemistry or SOMETHING lacking. Maybe I just need to start watching it all over again?

Thoughts?

Killing off most of the cast is NOT the answer.

I wasn't crazy about Kes on Voyager (to me, she was warmed-over Troi). That said, I wasn't calling for her to be killed, either.

See, Narek is probably my favorite Romulan performance ever in Star Trek that I can recall.

I prefer....

I just want to see her get her comeuppance. I’m not entirely satisfied or convinced with her breakthrough in the last episode. Honestly, it was exposition heavy and seemed mechanical. Everything converged and was explained and it didn’t ring real for me. But I guess whole new stuff opens up next episode...

I really don’t think it’s going to happen so I wouldn’t worry.

Yes, many of the previous plot threads were all resolved or tied up neatly with a bow at the end of 1x08, that normally means we will be getting new ones in the next episode.

In other words "the plot thickens".

I think maybe that’s why I’m not totally feeling the crew. Their progression and development don’t feel natural. They feel somewhat deliberate or forced.

I don’t know there is a progression here so much as unfurling. This is one ten-part story, not a fluid evolution.
