I liked the episode but it was too much of a bridge episode to get us to the finale. No where near as good as last week.

I did really like temporary Borg Queen Seven of Nine. Shame we didn’t get some real Borg action on the Romulans. Would have loved to see some running firefights with drones after she basically executed the xBs. Some righteous vengeance would have been great.

I have a feeling we are going to see a rebooted Data that is appropriately aged to Spiner.

Loved the episode.

Seven connecting with the artifact was terrifying, and I feared she wouldn't be able to disconnect.
Yet incredible powerful free will in overriding it, plus she was the one who connected, (it was her choice) , as apposed to forced into being a drone, she was in charge going in.
And she's been disconnected long enough she's forged and embraced her Anika identity, which she used to channel and reclaim her "self".
I really loved that scene!

Although we still haven't seen the full ramification of connecting (even temporarily) , it may still end up haunting her?

I like how they handled Agnes, don't know that she's forgiven? More like they empathize, I think they all recognize there has been major manipulation going on, and they all seem to have that in common.
She doesn't seem a threat right now, and they are trying to get to the truth, she still has more to offer towards that end. So all that, makes her one of them.

Picard and Soji talking about Data, and Soji recognizing Data would have loved him, was a beautiful scene.

Rios, I only wish the ibn Mājid and the death of his Captain narrative, had visually been shown in flash-back, not just narrated.
Would have loved to see him in uniform, and a shot of a Capital ship. (despite the end of it's crew)
But him and Picard reconnecting with what Strafleet had lost to fear, and going forward with a mission to overcome it (which is what he'd been looking for) was fantastic!
Soji asking for him to take her home, broke me (and fixed him apparently)

Also all the suspected pieces coming together for Raffi, really brings her to focus and life, which is what she needed.

I really love how this crew of "broken pieces" came together.
Great show.

While I was watching this episode, the entire time I was picturing myself saying what Sisko said in his captain's log: "I can live with it..."

It was essentially a lot of plot exposition and hand waving over various things that require a significant degree of suspension of disbelief, but you know what, I can fucking live with it. The execution has been marvellous and this show is such a pleasure to watch, so yeah, I can live with it.

Ummm... that kinda-sorta sums up All of Star Trek right from the get go back in 1966.
;)

lol, fair point. I was referring more to specific leaps in logic and things you just have to accept that maybe would fall apart if you nitpicked closely enough, but in this case it was done so well that I don't have any problem accepting it.

A Synth that looks just like Brent Spiner and that is what Data always wanted to be. Look human. Behave like a human. Cry. Laugh. Eat. Sleep. And love.

I can totally sign up for that and would probably love to watch it.

Should have been Soji rather than Data in that vision. Would explain how that Romulan lady recognized her.

This was a very entertaining episode overall. Here's my thoughts on it:

The Good
-The mystery was great. I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see how the story progressed, who was Jana (although I figured it out right away), what happened to Rios, how Starfleet and the Romulans tied into this.
-Seven plugging into the collective and becoming queen was scary. The eye effects were especially good. Way more chilling then what we saw in FC. When she said, "We are Borg..." really good.
-Soji was great as usual. "I won't give you the chance" was particularly strong.
-Raffi was incredibly likable this episode and I like the banter between her and Picard so much more here. "Fact."
-I loved that the evil Romulan sister isn't just this cackling villain but believes in her cause.
-The effects of the Borg cube reforming was breathtaking.

The Bad
-We're supposed to believe this Zhat Vash has been around for thousands of years? They hate and fear synthetic lifeforms because synths could end all synthetic life or at least be the destroyer of worlds. Yet never got brought up while Data was around. No assassination attempts on him, nothing. And they were able to keep this a secret for thousands of years, but one member gets drunk and spills the beans? A great bit noticeable retcon.
-We have so much 'member berries going on throughout this series, but Picard can't relate to what Soji is feeling about fake memories? Really? What about "The Inner Light"? This is more of a nitpick than actual "bad."
-Admiral Clancy dropping the f-bomb again. I don't mind cursing in general. I admit I was taken back going from TNG to PIC with the cursing though. But okay. More naturalistic and contemporary. But the way it's done here is kind of pathetic. It's like a child learning the f-word for the first time. "...fucking hubris." Okay, I can buy that. But here it's just used for laughs and makes it sound like dialogue written for a millennial, not an old lady. It's very unnatural the way it's used and the way the actress delivers it.
-Multiple xBs are murdered. Cool. The upped ante of violence is to depict realism and horror of death right? I didn't get that at all. Just random figures getting shot, dropping to the ground. Closer to a scene from video game scene where you have your character just shooting bad guys.
-Soji questions her own likes and dislikes, her past, but suddenly feels kinship with the two characters from Rios's story and refers to them as "brother and sister" and wants to go save them at risk to everyone else as well?
-Raffi saying, "that's not even a language." That sounds like something funny someone would say in 2020, in particular from a sitcom or movie. It's used when someone really isn't speaking another language but just mouthing off some gibberish or speaking really poorly. In the world of Star Trek it's incredibly likely that it IS another language.
-Raffi saying it's cool that there's this crazy conspiracy. Kind of cool, I mean. Again, dialogue that feels out of place in the context of something so serious. This doesn't feel like dialogue from someone far in the future, of that age, and who held such a high position in Starfleet.
-I can't get Jurati's excitement over Soji. I get it's supposed to be a big deal, but in the far far future where they can create holo people that can interact with physical surroundings and people, and Data was in Starfleet like any other member, yet Jurati is going to be so starstruck? Amazed at three small moles on her face? This is the reaction of a scientist from 2020, not a scientist living in 2399.
-"I'm not going to murder anyone else." She has the cringiest dialogue of all the characters.
-So the replicants/Skynet are prophesied to destroy humanity and all other humanoid life. Not really too original for mainstream science-fiction.
-The imagery from Judgement Day wasn't anything special. Those Romulans were acting like they witnessed indescribable Lovecraftian horrors. But when those horrors are not only described but witnessed by the viewer, and it doesn't instill in us anything sickening or disturbing, it's hard to go along with the characters bashing their own brains in and committing suicide. Not a very believable collage of insanity. I saw an I, Robot robot face, then Data's, a world blowing up, and some thing that looked cellular structure. Oooh, scary.

I don't like how Data, and synths seem to be the alpha and omega of Star Trek story at this moment.

However...this is still a fun ride. Three good episodes in a row.

that’s kinda what I was getting at. Something the Maddox left behind as a gift to Data or some such.

The Zhat Vash were considered a myth, even by the Tal Shiar. And the Zhat Vash did respond to Data and that response was to get Oh to infiltrate Starfleet, as speculated by Raffi in the episode. It's pretty much implied as well that it was the widespread use of synthetics by the Federation that caused the Zhat Vash to finally act. One Android is not a breach of the 'threshold' a whole society of Synths is. Also people who can withstand the psychological horror Zhat Vash initiates have to endure would not 'get drunk and spill the beans'.

The Zhat Vash were considered a myth, even by the Tal Shiar.
But they were real and working behind the scenes.

And the Zhat Vash did respond to Data and that response was to get Oh to infiltrate Starfleet, as speculated by Raffi in the episode.
So the Zhat Vash infiltrated Starfleet once they found out about Data but didn't do anything the whole time he was alive.

It's pretty much implied as well that it was the widespread use of synthetics by the Federation that caused the Zhat Vash to finally act.
So they waited till the Federation mass produced to do something? That doesn't make any sense. So if Data didn't die and no synthetics were mass produced Oh would have just been chilling in her role as a Romulan spy for the secretive Zhat Vash and...just wait till the Federation DOES make more Datas and run the risk they get lost in the wild. Starfleet was aware that Data had already reproduced another sentient being. And if Data was truly this unique specimen, and the he's the key to this apocalyptic horror, then it makes no sense to leave him a live and wait till the menace gets out of control.

One Android is not a breach of the 'threshold' a whole society of Synths is.
And by not taking out Data once the Zhat Vash had infiltrated Starfleet there's a whole hidden planet full of them, and the Queen or Destructor is alive and among them. Makes sense.

Also people who can withstand the psychological horror Zhat Vash initiates have to endure would not 'get drunk and spill the beans'.
Then how did Picard's housekeeper find out about the secretive Zhat Vash and their hatred of synthetics? And how this secret would make you go insane.

The xB called Soji "The Destroyer". In the case of the ancient race, I think we can assume that the robots eventually started a rebellion after they achieved organic like sentience. The rebellion caused a civil war that led to the destruction of the ancient civilization. Maybe there was a robot that looked like Soji who was the robot leader of the rebellion.

Yes, it has a BSG feel to it. Basically, this ancient race created robots that eventually became indistinguishable from organic life and it led to the destruction of their civilization so they set up this warning. The Zhat Vash are convinced that it will happen again which is why they are determined to wipe out all synthetic life before it has a chance to destroy all life.

The whole "message" of the show seems to be that synthethics are not automatically evil and would not automatically cause the apocalypse. The ancient race warned about what happened to them but it does not have to happen to others. The Zhat Vash are making the false assumption that it will automatically happen again because of their fear of synths. So it is our fears and prejudices that really destroy us.

So the Zhat Vash came upon these "memories" but they don't know anything of the actual civilization so they could be misinterpreting what happened. But if the memories have a vision of Data, that implies that it's a prophecy or event from the future. So it could be a self-fulfilling prophecy. The Zhat Vash fear that the Destroyer will destroy worlds, so they have to destroy the Destroyer and all her kin to prevent that from happening.
Of course, persecution and the threat of being exterminated is what convinces the synths, the Destroyer and her kin to destroy worlds for their own self preservation.
Jurati is asked if she would kill Soji. And Soji tell her that she wouldn't give her the chance. So it's foreshadowing that Soji's self preservation of herself and her brothers and sisters is going to be a priority or at least, be a conflict of interest coming up.

The synths will be revealed to be just like anybody else, with the ability to help or destroy, like mutants in the Marvel universe. They have superpowers and apparently the have the ability to help mankind. That's also set up early on. If you let the synths be created and multiply, that technology could have been used to save Riker and Troi's son, and others like him.

Or maybe they'll borrow more pages from Asimov and Soji will be the Moses of the synths.

I only wish they either got Hallie Todd to play Dahj and Soji, or they retconned Lal into looking like Isa Briones.
