Single best Star Trek season?

I know many would say TOS S1, but for my money TNG S3 is the absolute greatest. DS9 S5 or S6 would also be good shouts.

Top 5, in order (best first), with the amount of separation between each...

TOS Season 1
TOS Season 2

DS9 Season 4

TNG Season 3
DS9 Season 5

Star Trek season one is by far the best for my money. With seasons two and three following.

Best of the spinoffs? I still immensely enjoy TNG seasons one and two. Three and four are solid. DS9 seasons two, three and four earn shoutouts.

If I were to pick a single best season of each series, this is my list.

TOS season 1
TNG season 3
DS9 season 4
VGR season 4
ENT season 4

DISCOVERY has not been on long enough for this to be a fair question, same with PICARD.

To pick one of the whole franchise, for me, it's a very tough call between TOS season 1 and DS9 season 4. I say DS9 VERY SLIGHTLY edges out because except for one of two plots of a single episode ("THE MUSE"), it's the closest thing to a perfect season I've seen STAR TREK do. There are a few full episodes of TOS season 1 that just don't do it for me... "MUDD'S WOMEN", "MIRI", and "THE ALTERNATIVE FACTOR". I give the first episode a pass because it was produced so very early, and with "MIRI" a lot of the kids just annoyed me, and the last episode was just... a mess. But because that season had even more episodes produced than later seasons of the franchise (29, the most of any by the way), I average it out more forgivingly, which is why I say it's such a close call.

I'll get a ton of shit for my actual choice and I know it, so I'll stick to Old Trek (1966-2005). I'll give the answer people want to hear.

I waffle between TOS Season 1 and 2. I think S1 is better but I like S2 better. If that makes any sense.

Discovery has aired two complete self-contained seasons. There are more Discovery episodes than episodes of The Animated Series. If you can judge the seasons of TAS, you can judge Discovery.

Discovery premiered over three years ago. It's not a brand new property anymore.

It wouldn’t change my answer any.

Amazingly, my instant and instinctive reply was TOS S1.
The season with the freakiest alien species, many non humaniod (Horta, Salt Vampire, Gorn etc), where the extras in corridors and changing shift on the bridge made the big E seem like a living ship, where Kirk was firmly in command and could occasionally be quite a no-nonsense hardnosed (bas@#$rd) commanding officer. Klingon and Romulan threats introduced.
And where the big three's banter and relationship was fresh.
All in all you can't better it.

  • Enterprise: Season 4
  • Star Trek: Discovery: Season 2
  • Star Trek: Short Treks: Season 1
  • Star Trek: Picard: Season 1

TAS is unfair to judge, too. The second season had 6 episodes, with the first having 16. I didn't add TAS to my list because it wasn't fair, in my opinion.

With DISCOVERY, I think it would be fair to judge it after their 3rd season is done. TOS had that many seasons, so any STAR TREK series 'best season' question should have a minimum of 3 seasons to be a good comparison.

Wow, this is cool.

I’ve always read in books and magazines how TOS Season 2 was the best, but I’ve always considered TOS Season 1 my favorite.

Shore Leave, Conscience of the King, Taste of Armageddon, Space Seed, City on the Edge, Return of the Archons, This Side of Paradise, Squire of Gothos, What Are Little Girls, and Mudds Women are among my favorite Trek episodes.

DS9 Season 5 is my all time favorite season. The rest of my top 5:

1. DS9 Season 5
2. TNG Season 3
3. DS9 Season 5
4. ENT Season 3
5. TNG Season 4

For me it's all 4's... season 4 is my favorite season of TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT. DS9 being the top pick among all of those.

No one kill me, but I actually think 3 is my favorite TOS season.

Star Trek Season 1

I thought that season hit triples and doubles from episode to episode; what I loved about it which none of the spinoffs, and the stuff Kurtzman is doing, is the world felt established. Although, the planets and aliens the Enterprise encountered it didn't feel new to them, this was what it is and I went with it. I still credit my Dad for not introducing me to "The Cage" when I was watching Star Trek in his chronological format (Captain's log), approaching "The Menagerie" was an extra bonus for me because I thought it was a treat, and some established history of the Enterprise. I didn't get the feeling the crew of the Enterprise mission started in the episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before" like TNG "Encounter at Farpoint" these women and men portrayed a backstory which gave me the impression there were other stories told before that episode with the ship.

Another plus was science fiction writers contributed to the series which gave that season an added bonus.
