Spoilers The Clone Wars - Season 7 Discussion [SPOILERS]

The only thing I can see as being "toned down" is the removal of that execution scene, though honestly that seems to have been done for pacing reasons, not content.
Also, literally the first scene on 'The Mandalorian'--Disney+'s flagship program--a dude gets cut in half by a door. But sure, they're totally toning down Star Wars.

A weird quirk of Star Wars is that planets tend to have only one biome, but diversity of cultures within a species, while Star Trek has planets with multiple biomes but no diversity in cultures for a given species (that isn't human, or happens to be a deviant of some kind within the species).

I mean, obviously, because Disney is such an evil company...

I thought episode 3 returned to the rather stale "Everybody wins, but some randoms get killed in the process by enemies with no regard for tactics" trope that TCW has suffered from for some time, but overall - this season has been quite good. Ready for the next arc...

I think with Trek that tends to happen because they usually design their aliens to represent a certain issue or human trait, so they pretty much write the whole species to fit that trait.

Windu: 'I have wrecked so many of you battle droids that its become dull to me. I will give you this chance to surprise me with something intelligent.'

Droids: 'Open fire!'

Kenobi: 'Well it was an attempt.'

Windu: 'Dull but violent dissembly process it is.'

I was pretty happy with the way they tied up the last Bad Batch episode. This one had a pretty good mix of action and character work.
I love Windu's attempt to not have to destroy all of the battle droids.
Having Echo join The Bad Batch was a nice way to tie up his arc.

It's funny how that speech came from Windu. Very much an Obi wan tactic.

Good episode, with some good humor, even with some darker moments.

TV spot for the next arc

This one was OK, definitely a smaller scale story, but I liked the sisters, and it was nice to get to see what happened to Ahsoka after she left the Jedi.

I liked this one. A nice slow pace, low stakes character piece is a welcome change after all the lasers and explosions.
It was already noticeable in the Bad Batch episodes, but here you can tell they've totally overhauled the facial animation rigging on Ahsoka and gone to the trouble of running physics simulation on her lekku.

I noticed that during one of the scenes, they actually racked focus between Ahsoka and Trace. I don't think they've ever done a shallow focus like on the show, much less pulling it mid-shot. I know it's a small detail but it really jumped out at me how they're really starting to embrace incorporating analogue film techniques into digital rendering. Adds a certain life the the image, no?

From a story POV, one wonders where this fits in the chronology. I mean she has a bike, a whole new outfit and gear so it's been a few days or weeks since she left the temple, which means this probably takes place between seasons 5 & 6. Which means the next seven episodes ought to take place over the course of a year or so.
One assumes she sold all her fancy Jedi gear and old headdress to get herself set-up, indeed she's wearing what looks like a mechanic's coveralls so she may have traded pretty everything including the clothes on her back at whatever place she bought that lemon of a T-85.

I can't help but wonder how much this episode and the "walkabout" arc as a whole changed from it's original incarnation. Replacing one character with two sisters probably means the whole thing was rewritten, even if a few of the story beats are essentially the same but contextualised.
I know it's a long shot, but I kinda hope that with the rejigging that they'll be able to integrate at least some of the middle "below the temple" arc somewhere into these four episodes too.

Agreed! When they teased a different ending than the reels, I thought were just going to have him die or something after all that effort to get him back!

Oh! Ahsoka's new jumpsuit/flightsuit, whatever she's wearing it's great. This part of her story is an awkward transition to 'regular joe' life... and she's got clothes to match!

While I would agree time has passed, I find it very interesting the way they chose to open the story: Ahsoka is speeding away from Topside, heading down into the transit shafts of Coruscant... and away from the more familiar to us area of the surface and the Jedi Temple. Maybe she'd been preparing to leave the Topside area of Coruscant and head to the lower levels and live a low key life during this time. The opening suggests to me it's like... "when we last left Ahsoka, she had left the Jedi temple..." etc implied continuity... and symbolizing Ahsoka's lost status. She's not an elite, clean-air breather anymore!

Is there really an entire year left between 7x05 and 7x12? That seems like a lot of time to blast through. The Bad Batch events must have taken at least a week or so... as always in Star Wars the timeline is a lot of guesswork.

While I loved The Bad Batch and all the great new stuff in it, Gone With a Trace was totally refreshing and exciting - as a huge fan of Coruscant and Level 1313 in particular, I was thrilled with the visuals we got. Scenes soaked in Blade-Runner style neon hues, it was excellent. The laundromat, diner at the end on the river area(!) and all the street scenes we saw during the droid chase were spectacular. Let's hope someday The Mouse figures out how to do Coruscant in a live action show.

Nixing Nyx for two sisters, Trace and Rafa Martez, I thought they were terrific. The rough-around-the-edges archetype is great for Ahsoka, because they represent the grey-Jedi lifestyle she's about to embrace. The character models looked great, too. I'm guessing Rafa (or both) will initially turn on Ahsoka when they find out she was a Jedi.

There is some criticism out there about this episode that it's boring and filler, etc. This is what we need to see - this is the end of The Clone Wars series. Things are winding down and they should be exploring Ahsoka's next moves like this. Next episode will be more exciting - they'll likely be captured, and then next one or two will be escaping and then defeating the bad guys - that's the 4-part TCW formula, anyway, we'll see how it pans out this time.

One last awesome treat - the music at the end at the diner sounds a lot like if Pet Shop Boys had a band in the SW Universe. Very John Hughes.

For those that are curious, here's the early version of the fight scene from this episode.

Looks like they re-wrote and re-recorded almost the entire thing but kept most of the staging. Indeed I only spotted one line of dialogue in common: "I think you want to leave now..."

I mean if nothing else, the "moof milker" line is pretty clear evidence this is largely newer material. ;)

I think Pablo specifically said a few years back that Ahsoka left the order about a year prior to the events of RotS, and since we know the end of the season will bring it right up to those events, yeah, the rest of the season ought to be spread across the best part of a year. As for where the Bad Batch arc falls; most likely several months to half a year *after* where Ahsoka is here and now, since Padme was quite clearly starting to show and Anakin has been out on the Outer Rim sieges for quite some time.

Remember, TCW isn't fully serialised, it's an anthology show. Some episodes take place earlier than the previous, others much later or in parallel. I mean just look at the official chronological order...

So yeah, chronologically we're probably somewhere between 520 and 601 at this point--604 at the latest. The second planned Bad Batch arc would have probably fallen right before the final arc since it deals with Kashyyyk and one gets the impression in RotS that the droid attack on the Wookiees was a recent-ish thing.

That episode may not have been the most thrilling of all time, but it was absolutely loaded with little things that I loved. All the Coruscant stuff was great, but I think my favorite scene was Ahsoka standing on the platform watching the ships go upwards. It felt incredibly cinematic.

It certainly stood out. I REALLY want to know about that music.

Referring to Anakin as her older brother was very sweet. Other than that it was okay. I agree the others that the aging of some of these characters doesn’t make much sense since it’s only 3 years. We’re getting into M*A*S*H territory.
