What did you imagine became of James Kirk before seeing Star Trek Generations?

He retired, got back together with Carol Marcus, settled down, and enjoyed his sunset years with her. His final fate is unknown.

That's still what I believe, BTW. :)

Was there a Pocketversion or two of his later life and death?
Nope, the novels would never have been allowed to off a major character like that while the films were still an ongoing thing.

They did manage to squeeze a half-dozen "final, final, final" missions in immediately after the end of STVI. And there were a couple more done Picard style, where Kirk is retired but gets a civillian ship and reunites his friends to save someone.

Pretty sure he banged a teenage or 20something cadet in one of them.

Tasha was killed on duty, carrying out a rescue mission. A very meaningful death. That pretty much goes for all the actors on the various series.

That's interesting. The actors, writers and producers are largely disagree.

Getting killed on duty doesn't automatically equate a meaningful death.

Putting on a uniform, walking out the door and getting shot in the back of the head... Hmm, I'd have thought that circumstances being a factor was obvious but I guess you just need to put on a uniform, punch the clock and that's good enough.

I mean, the actor had a bad go of it. But the character died in the line of duty (she was killed doing her job... a job where being killed is a known possibility), and her death is about as meaningful as most redshirts who died in TOS. It made sense in-universe, and frankly, is much more likely than the amazing survivals of nost of the rest of the cast members throughout twenty-five seasons of Berman era TV.

They could've pumped up her death more. Moved it to the end of the season. Had it be from some serious multi-episode threat. Give us an entire Yar-centric episode preceding it (a la Airiam). But all that would just be appeasing the actors, writers, producers, and fans. Bottom line, her death would still be being killed in the line of duty, and just as meaningful as Spock's death in Star Trek II.

Why would Kirk want to get back with Marcus? He'd already banged her and moved on.

Yesterdays news.

After VI, I thought Kirk did personal travels across the galaxy leaving Starfleet behind for good, but if they ever needed him... he would answer the call.
I love the Gillian character, more than Carol Marcus which after watching the horrid III that relationship was over, and I thought their relationship had the potential to grow.

He used the Guardian of forever to reunite with his great loves, you know the one lasted one episode and was quickly forgotton

I would have preferred it left unsaid. However if they need to kill him off wish they could have done a Yesterday's Enterprise sendoff.

I imagined that after he left Starfleet he bought his own smallish ship and disappeared into the black. Fate unknown.
