The fact that Riker is still on the active reserve list certainly suggests that he may return at some point, though I wouldn't say its a definite; probably a just-in-case they want him for next season. I doubt he'll show up this season again, simply because Chabon said that Picard calling him "Commander" was a mistake. If Captain Riker was coming back as an active officer then that mistake wouldn't have been made, surely.

Death follows characters in their backstories throughout Star Trek: Troi's father died when she was young; Troi's sister; Crusher's husband/Wesley's father; both of Worf's parents; Sisko's wife/Jake's mom; both of Kira's parents; the Dax lineage; Chakotay's father; Archer's father; ... .

And then there are the family deaths that occur during the series.

Yeah, during DS9, Kira had it particulary bad: all her former co-terrorists (murdered), several ersatz fathers, her lover Vedek Creepy...

Ah yes, I now remember that the father would have certain rights (unless she remarried) because it was a son.

Now I'd like to read a fanfic about the adventures of Little Troi!

That’s not how Chekhov’s Gun works. If they show it, it will fire. Riker is coming back this season, it’s a given.

Yeah, as soon as he talked about "active reserve" or whatever I immediately thought that we'd be seeing him again. It doesn't make sense for them to talk about it otherwise.

If Riker does come back this season, it’ll be in the final episode. But then they’ll probably kill him off, if PIC’s track record is any indication.

Not an impossibility. I wouldn’t want to have him killed, but the fact that he may, is very exciting television.

Some random responses, the morning after.

1) Despite what's been discussed, I didn't get the impression that Riker had opposed the Romulan evacuation effort, just that he had ruefully predicted that dealing with that many Romulans was not going to be easy. It's possible to do the right thing for right reasons while also realizing that there are going to be serious problems and consequences down the road. Doesn't mean you don't evacuate the Romulans, just that you go in with your eyes open to the headaches and challenges ahead. "We have to do this, but it's going to suck."

2) Don't think Jurati was trying to kill herself. She was trying to disable the tracker, even though she knew that could kill her. Dying was a risk, not the goal.

How come Will didn't say, "You named your dog after me?"
They're saving that for later.
How the Picard show will end--

Picard: Come on, Will.
Elnor: Please, what does this mean? Always with this Will?
Picard: That's his name: William Thomas Riker.
Riker: I like Number One.
Picard: I named the dog Number One.
Elnor: The dog? You are named after the dog.
Raffi: Can we go home please?

I'd be shocked if they kill Riker (or Troi). That's just not something they can do without risking pissing off a LARGE chunk of the fanbase.

What you might see though is Riker using his seemingly intact clout with Starfleet (clout that Picard has lost) to give him passage on the Enterprise and go on a mission to save Picard.

It does make me wonder now: do most replicators produce dangerous chemicals upon request? I mean I know the replicator gave a warning but still. Because that would give dangerous people a lot of power as far as murder, or depressed people could just replicate poison for themselves for suicide. I'm wondering if, like holodecks, replicators have safety protocols that have to be deactivated to produce such chemicals, and Rios' already had those safety protocols deactivated (or Agnes deactivated them).

I'm hoping they bring back the Executive Officer in Charge of Radishes and brutally murder him. Picard lost his family in a fire, Dahj was melted and exploded, Icheb tortured and shot in the heart, Hugh bled out from the neck, Maddox internal bleeding and suffocation. What is the most horrible way we can kill the Radish guy?

It occurred to me that Riker and Troi could have gone back in time to San Francisco anywhere between 1800s and 24th century, picked up Data's head and used it to cure their son, then put it back. Kirk did more over humpback whales.
And yet Kirk never used the Guardian of Forever to prevent David's death....

IRC, Paris said we don't do that anymore in a VOY episode, and Nog made it clear that humans stopped doing it after figuring out how harmful it is. If they'd gotten rid of all the harmful components by then, wouldn't Paris and Nog have a different attitide?
Its a large universe, maybe tobacco is exported to Andor to make tea? What is harmful to humans might be medicinal to another species, so easily obtainable.

Where does that information come from and could it have been corrupted or skewed over time.
Yeah that Sky net vision makes no sense, unless Commodore Oh (An Admiral should be Head of Starfleet intelligence not a Commodore) transplanted her paranoi into Dr.Jurati I see no reason for anyone to experience someone else vision and then say 'oh yes I am a believer and I will kill for you'!! Unless she digested Vulcan kool aid in that tablet or Oh is the daughter of 'share your pain' Sybok.

I thought Rios was suspecting Agnes but Raffi?
He does not want to sleep with Raffi, and fancies Agnes, he is thinking with the wrong head

They were there with my mother cheering him on... In any case I made it clear now that after this incident, if there are any attempts by my mother or brother to come near my home, or to coerce me into attending any events with them, I will call in law enforcement.
I cheer you on! I am not a believe in hanging out with toxic humans just because you share DNA.

Well, I guess Starfleet would like you as long as you're a well-behaved yes man who will obey all orders even if it costs you the life of your son. Honestly Riker should be giving an FNN interview and he'd get far more sympathy than Picard did (since I think the Fed citizens can relate to Thad more than to Romulan refugees).

It was nice to see Mr. And Mrs. Troi and we got some back story, but I can't shake the feeling that this was the first "filler" episode of what has been a very good series so far.

Laughed at "House! Shields up!"
