Spielberg won't do Indy 5

Yep, Spielberg had clearly lost his edge, at least when it come to Action/Adventure. And if we are ever going to turn Indy movies into a franchise like James Bond, the new blood is essential.

As long as Spielberg is still involved as a producer and has a guiding hand in it, I'm fine with it. Getting a director like James Mangold certainly helps a lot.

Of course, what do I know? I'm one of the five people who loved The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (but I also admit that it has some flaws).

Crystal Skull is great until they get to South America. I can forgive nuking the fridge. Bad special effects and mishandled plot threads in the second half is my problem with it.

Shia swinging like Tarzan was game over for me...

I enjoyed it too.
Mangold would be a great fit for the movie. If Ford is onboard for the change in director, that's cool with me.

Spielberg is still involved and Mangold is a good director so I'm fine with this.

Would people prefer a reboot? Harrison is well...

Old, surely too old to play Indy again.

The original plan back in the Eighties was for 5 movies. The completist in me will be glad to see that.

I also want to see more Indy movies set back in the 20s to the 40s with a younger actor, but not a reboot, have them in continuity with the Ford movies. The only stumbling block is that Ford doesn't want a recast. And if he doesn't give his blessing to the new actor it won't work.

At the risk of pretentiousness, Mangold consistently makes solid flicks, whereas Spielberg sometimes makes great films, and often makes legitimately important ones. So, if this frees Spielberg to deliver another Lincoln/Bridge of Spies/The Post sooner rather than later, I'm all for it, particularly given my lack of enthusiasm for his West Side Story remake.
