As I've noted in the past, fanwank is popular, and this episode was absolutely full of it.

You're misreading why people like the episode. Having references and familiar characters doesn't automatically make me think "THIS IS AWESOME!!!!" No one here has has said that.

We like the episode because we like where it took the characters and where it wasn't afraid to go.

What do you mean by that?

There were lots of hardcore fan call outs in this episode. Off the top of my head:
  • Icheb in the opener, with the inclusion of lots of little bits of lore (like his not having a cortical implant.
  • Seven being here in general
  • Freecloud having a Mott's barbershop and Quark's bar
  • Another reference to Quark dealing with the Breen

Fanwank is not always a bad thing. As I've said in the past, Star Trek: First Contact is far and away the most fankwanky of Trek movies, and it's not a bad movie at all.

There were absolutely people in this thread who said they rated the episode so highly because they were psyched to see Seven back in action though.

Those are minor, blink and you miss it things. You know better than this.

I don't go thinking, "They mentioned Quark! Oh my God! This is a 10!!! Mott's Barber Shop! It's an 11!"

Some, maybe. But don't please paint us all the same way. If I thought the story was horrible, they could've had a Total & Complete TNG/VOY Reunion and it wouldn't have done anything for me.

I liked the references to the bar. I forgot about Mott until I read about it here.

I didn’t like disguise thing at all and felt like the sort of thing we saw back when Berman and company were running out of ideas.

And as I mentioned many times, I didn’t like that Maddox was recast only because of the build up. If he had just shown up without build up, I probably wouldn’t have noticed the recasting.

The reboot movies were subject to diminishing returns and have already largely been forgotten in a pop cultural landscape that movies faster and faster every day. Not a day goes by where there isn't a new movie, a new hit show, a new nostalgia-baiting reboot...
Compared to the final TNG film Star Trek: Nemesis; Star Trek Beyond (the worst perfoming JJ Trek film was a BLOCKBUSTER at the Box Office. It didn't get beat out by a second tier Rom Com film with a mediocre pop star on opening weekend. The TOS reboot films overall were VERY successful in comparison to the TNG films, and to think they were somehow 'forgotten' over a Trek series that aired nearly 30 years previous...

Yeah no. You ask someone who's casual RE; Star Trek, and they'll probably answer: Oh yeah, that that sci fi show with Captain Kirk...

I saw a youtube review video that made the point that the whole Icheb thing would have been much more powerful if the opener was Icheb's shuttle crashing or him being captured. When Seven finally reveals to Picard why she hates Bejazzl, her monologue could have been intercut with the gore scene. That way there would have been some tension regarding what happened to Icheb that played out over the course of the first two acts of the episode.

I gave this a 7 but it could just as easily been a 6 for me. Once I knew that was Echeb I wasn't happy at all. I liked his character a lot. Also I dont understand why they couldn't get the actor who played him. Same for Maddox.

I also didn't like the scientist becoming a killer at the end based on what she was shown. I dont buy it for a minute a nerdy doctor with zero military experience is going to murder her ex lover just like that. Without even attempting to convince him of her position. No way in the real world a character like that commits murder so fast.

I found the whole thing about that character finding her son who rejects here also tedious and boring.

I loved seeing seven. Hope we see her again.

I feel like there is a general lack of overall character development. This show needs more than 10 episodes. I dont know if Stewart had the endurance for more but the show could sure use it.

Overall I still enjoy it even with my nitpicks. I despise discovery but the writing here is far better.

Zod from Superman Cinema????

I agree with you about the character development which I would’ve expected in a new Star Trek show. I felt like the Mandalorian had more character development five episodes in

"TATV...(ENT)" was fan service. In fact it was lovingly called "a Valentine to the fans." It clearly wasn't and is a prime example of what happens when fan service ideas go horribly wrong and the finished product doesn't remotely match the advertising. I enjoy some good fan service in the Star Trek franchise but some of it is awful.

I agree with... pretty much all of it, with possibly the exception of your feelings about discovery. I think it's a product that is inferior to what it could easily have been but not to the point that I would despise it.
