AFAIK, the producers (of both shows) have said that DSC season 3 will have nothing to do with anything in PIC. (And it is definitely on record that whatever happens in PIC, the Federation is not being portrayed as evil.) So it's not like PIC is setting things up for the fall of the Federation. However that happens, DSC will be the only show which explores or even mentions it.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the do a “Brexit” style Federation in S3. I kinda had a thought the other night about what could happen, from what we’ve already been told.

We’ve seen that it still exists in some form, but only includes 6 members.

What I’d find interesting to watch is that perhaps Earth became more isolationist at some point and the powers that be basically started a disinformation propaganda campaign against the Federation, which results in Earth actually leaving. Anything Federation related could be seen like we view Nazi or Confederate artifacts, negatively, and anyone pro-Federation to be “traitors”.

As Earth is one of the main founding members who keep the Federation together, over time many other members leave, not seeing the point of remaining without United Earth.

It’s then up to the Discovery crew to reveal they are from the past and that everything Humans think about the Federation is wrong. That it was a force for good, not evil. And that the disinformation campaign was done for self serving reasons. They work with the remaining member worlds and supports to get Earth to rejoin and eventually other worlds, to restore the Federation to what it once was.

This would go with the producers saying that it would be a more “positive” season. Basically Discovery is a beacon of good and everything the Federation stands for.

Reminds me of the Doctor's experience when the Voyager crew is remembered as a conquering band of militants, and the Doctor tries to set the record straight.

Well, if the Federation was fine in the 32nd/33rd Century, there wouldnt be much for Discovery to do there. So I can see how some decision was made, once it was decided to reset the show in the far future, to give them some purpose or mission. Otherwise all you have is a 900-1000 something year old antiquated ship just tooling around in a vastly more advanced society.

In the Short Trek, what did that guy call the time of Discovery? The "Before Time"? Id have to rewatch it. But it felt like an almost post-apocalyptic world, where people know there was a time before. A civilization now gone and lost.

    The "long ago" I think.

Craft's personality reminded me of that Auden poem musée des beaux arts in that even when everything has fallen apart, people are still going about their business, living their lives.

I very much think the opening scene is going to be Burnham's Red Angel HUD being hacked, and her being pulled out of the timestream a few decades (a century?) early, with her mission being to change time and save the Federation from its total demise. The first episode is her (and us) seeing what the universe is like, and her sending a message to her mother in the future via the Trill symbiote pools.

As for the USS Discovery, I reckon they reach the year 3187, see it's pretty much a shithole, leave a few crew members behind there, pick up some new ones, and then go back in time to assist Burnham on changing the timeline.

So all of DSC season 3 will be erased at the end of the season by a reset button? Then what’s the point of watching it? I certainly hope that’s not what the showrunners are planning.

What's the point of watching any show? I watch it for the characters.

No, the events happen. They would then travel forward to when Burnham’s mother is, and have changed the timeline so there’s a full Starfleet and Federation. Then it becomes the new default setting for all future Star Trek shows.

I'm not either but if I'm engaged with the characters I'm more tolerant.

I learned that on a show somewhere... :)

Worked for "Year of Hell", didn't it?

Everybody knew that was going to be undone, yet it was still fun to watch.

“Year of Hell” was, like, two episodes. Not an entire season.

I mean, let's be real-there are very few shows out there that succeed by killing off the main characters. And yet we believe that they are in peril on a weekly basis.

Things getting undone is as Trek like as bright uniforms as phasers.

Didn't Game of Thrones do exactly that?

The likeliest scenario for a "fall of the Federation, even though they've got shiny time-travel tech" is that whatever it would have taken to prevent the fall would have resulted in different people running the show, something that those in power weren't prepared to listen to as they'd rather have kept their power, even in a declining Federation than not had it in a thriving one.
