For myself, it's not the violence which has me turning against the show. It is that I live in a world which is unremittingly depressing, so I seek a relief from that world. Star Trek used to qualify; now, it is as dark and as oppressive and as futile as the world I live in.

the most disappointing thing about the latest Picard episode was how they used Maddox. In the end, he just told Picard what WE already knew, that his daughter was on the Artifact. If that was his only function (from a plot standpoint) I might have been okay with that. But I wanted to see something between Picard and Maddox that reflected the great debates they had over sentience and android rights they had in the series.. and I wanted to know if Picard's warning, that such a "race" would become slaves (like ones on Mars) could have something to do with Maddox, or at least have Picard point out how his warning came true. I wanted to see discussion!

I liked the ep. That said, I think they should have kept Maddox around for a couple of episodes before killing him off. Anyone else suspects Borg tech was used in Dahj/Soji's creation?

No, they had to use Maddox. If the show said, "Hey, we're searching for the greatest cyberneticist in the galaxy, the only one who could possibly have created a new Data" and they DIDN'T use Maddox, then the hyperfans would be up in arms.

Besides, far better to use a character with a little bit of actual history than just inventing a new rando. Since some version of that character needed to exist for their story to work (and I use the word "work" loosely), then going with the established Maddox was the smart and correct thing to do.
Hyperfans would be enraged regardless.

I still don't agree it was the best choice. But, it's a small detail and I won't quibble over it.

I would never say TOS is too far in the past. The vast majority of pop culture tributes and parodies of Star Trek use Kirk, Spock and TOS as their characters and settings. TNG is the second most legendary Trek in the eyes of the world at-large if I had to judge the relative popularity of both series based on how often I've seen them spoofed on TV, in cartoons or in comics and artwork.

Once upon a time, yes. And there still is a little bit of a default for TOS regarding those kinds of spoofs and references. But it doesn't really happen that much anymore and it's considered very, very old at this point.

TNG has (more or less) supplanted TOS as what modern people think of when they think of Trek.

Speaking of Quark, how could they go through all the trouble of name dropping him in the episode, and even calling that bar they were in "Quark's" and NOT have Quark himself in the episode?! That would've been such a great cameo!

You and I experience fandom differently.

I don't consider screeching youtube harpies to be representative of anything. So if that's where you're getting this negativity from, I'd recommend stepping aside.

On something like this BBS or other fansites, which are obviously filled with die-hard fans, can you think of any examples of people bitching about the very notion of bringing Maddox back?

It would have been a far, far more organic cameo than the insanely dumb way they jammed Seven into the episode for no earthly reason.

Eh. Gonna disagree there but to each their own.

Hahaha...no. YouTube sucks.

On Reddit, yeah, occasionally. Here, less so.

At the very least, the episode should have had Ferengi working at the casino and latinum visible in plain sight.
