While Enterprise is conveniently the only ship around in TMP, the novelization talks about massive stationary firepower around Earth. This naturally turns out to be no use at all against such a technologically superior enemy. Don't recall if any of that dialogue made it into the film.
Or the weed smoking crackpot is right about a conspiracy inside Starfleet. They should put Commander Oh on that.

This proves that.
Knives haven’t changed all that much in thousands of years. Made with new materials, sure, but they still have similar characteristics.
Same with artillery cannons. A 155mm howitzer in 2020 is very similar to a 155mm howitzer half a century ago but targeting systems and accuracy have improved in addition to new computerized ballistics being added to towed and self-propelled systems. At their heart, though, they're basically the same weapon that armies have used for the entire postwar period.
Just punch a round out 40 kilometers instead of 18-24 kilometers and land it closer to the target, but that's about it.
