Would Riker get away with calling Picard "JL"?

This is because in the TNG canonical writing style previous to "Picard"

Bland and predictable tropes are not something which should be considered binding canon decades later, particularly when that sort of thinking already ran the franchise into the ground.

May as well resolve the story after 40 minutes with some technobabble and then warp into the distance if we’re going down that route.

Nor should the character of Picard be considered as being kept in stasis for decades. He was already quite different in the TNG films, and this is years later in a different environment.

This is absolutely true and needs to be reiterated for Star Trek in general. Star Trek doesn't need to be stagnant.

ETA: I think the main thing with the nickname is that its not a big deal because Picard doesn't make it a big deal. This whole furor over it feels like a person being offended on behalf of another person. It's strange.

That's not the point. It's been 20 years and Picard would have new relationships.

Exactly. It's not as though some hitherto-unmentioned character suddenly turned up out of the blue in Season 6 of TNG and was suddenly Picard's friend and confidant.

It's been two decades. Think about how many new people and relationships most of us have formed over the last 20 years, how many close friends and colleagues we might have lost track of, how many relationships have changed and evolved since 2000 A.D.

In real life, people and relationships evolve over time. So why not on STAR TREK?

Near as I can tell Raffi knew Picard for 4 years (2381 per licensed, albeit noncanon, sources when he met her to 2385 in his resignation and falling out with Raffi). She's calling him JL as of 2385.

In real life I've had a coworker ignore a facebook friend request after working with them for 4 years (with no indication in real life interactions there was anything amiss, even after it was ignored. And I wisely never brought it up in person).

And I'm someone who was described by my boss in one of my evaluations as "Everyone in the office likes you."

I once had sexual congress with a man with 40 minutes of meeting him - what is your point caller?

I am extremely guarded with people who I have on Facebook. Even with coworkers whom I work closely with I do not always accept friend requests.

There is so much going on in these scant few sentences...

If that Coworker is anything like me, I only have actual Family Members as FB friends.

Right. You know why it's not a big deal? Because it's not a big deal. Next.

And I had a coworker of 3 years as a groomsman at my wedding. Workplace relationships can vary from casual acquaintance at the photocopier to lifelong friend, I wouldn't imagine everyone Picard met is calling him by nicknames, but it is obvious if nothing else from the fact that Raffi's star rises and falls with his that they are working very closely indeed.

Exactly.

Why, if you don't believe Riker could get away with it, would you ever Raffi could get away with it?

What's even odder, is the chorus of voices on this forum that are not only defending this writing decision, but attacking those who point out the absurdity.

It all goes back to the "10/10, shut up troll" mentality that has become pervasive in greater nerd culture. If anything is attached to your favorite property, we no longer use the scale of 1 - 10; we use 10 - 11.

The most boring, pedantic drivel you can find on TV will be given a "10/10" by fanboys as long as it features the character(s) they are invested in emotionally; and anybody who offers any form of criticism will be designated as a "troll" or "bot" to invalidate said criticism.

I like Picard so far. I think it has potential and that the second half is set up to be very good. That being said, the show has flaws. Many of those flaws are in the writing, and pointing that out does not make you the devil.

Everything you like is not a 10/10, and everything you dislike is not a 0/10. Just stop it.

It's not that Riker couldn't get away with it, it's just that his background is such that he wouldn't even try.
People are not all cut from the same jib.

Raffi's background is such that she WOULD try and apparently Jean-Luc was OK with it.

What's really strange here is that Sir Patrick Stewart is apparently very much involved with the shows scripts and also, according to reports, involved in the day-to-day filming of the episodes.

It seems with that that HE doesn't have a problem with Michelle Hurd's Character calling Admiral Picard "JL" ...

Why the Hell should we as the viewing audience have any problem with it ?????

By all means, let's talk about the writing, the acting, the directing choices, etc.

Let's put behind us the discussion about whether the black woman on the cast has sufficiently respected the old white man.

I really don't think it is a decision that needs defending as it works for me.

In The Last Best Hope, their relationship is explained beautifully before Picard even meets Raffi Musiker...
