That's not what Picard said. What he said in substance was that in the 24th century they no longer pursued the acquisition of wealth. This was misleading, if not dishonest, as Picard is by any standards a very wealthy man and his friend (I forget the name) isn't.

Of course he is. Picard lives in something of an ivory tower.

So as I said the wealthy man could still have been so, depending on his investments, while Picard implied that he wasn't.

What I'm saying is that Offenhouse's investments were likely wiped out, along with his attorneys during World War III.

We shouldn't have to invent our own explanations to paper over weak writing.

Do we really need it spelled out? Her association with Picard cost her her job, it seems fairly cut and dry. And, historically, we know Starfleet can be petty. Look at the 1701-A they gave Kirk after he slipped the "noose" on those regulations violations.

My wife, who up until this show has only watched Voyager (and she loves it), is annoyed that they aren't answering important questions.

What happened to the Borg post-Endgame?
What is going on with The Doctor now that synthetic life is banned?

The Doctor is not a Synth.
He's an AI with "Future Alien Technology" that allows him to be mobile from static EMH emitters.
And obviously, since we see EH's on Rios ship it's is likely that the Federation classifies Synth's & AI's separately.

If Star Fleet had to also shut down all AI's, their fleet of ships would become obsolete overnight.

They're fine and they will be back.

After the Voyager returned to Earth and Doctor was no longer critically needed he was banned. Not because the synth ban but because he was just too annoying.

The writing may be due to the fact that Patrick has a lot more input into the writing than usual, as revealed in interviews. And by his own admission he "doesn't usually like science fiction". The rest of the writing staff goes along with his whims because, well, he's Sir Patrick Stewart and the star.

This may be true on an exact words level, but we've seen in every holodeck malfunction episode and with Moriarty and the fact there's an army of Picardo EMH laborers with axes to grind that holographic entities can indeed be dangerous.

While I don't want these "Picard moments" with everybody in awe of JL, I hope they don't go overboard with "deconstructing" this trope by having everybody sneer at him and act completely unimpressed.

I think we're getting a good mix of all of these moments. ENH was truly in awe, the jerk ensign and CNC were rude, everyone else is more or less between these extremes.

Probably. Though I got the impression that Rios wan't running an exactly lawful operation to begin with so breaking the hypothetical AI ban wouldn't probably bother him that much.

Obviously, there's an entire planet in the Federation that builds and programs AI's.
Banning them would destroy that Fed. Member's entire economy.

We don't need it "spelled out" but we need a logical explanation that tracks. And "Starfleet's petty" isn't it. You can't be fired TODAY from an ordinary job just for your association with someone else.

There's no way Starfleet acts that way and saying "ha ha remember the Ent-A" from 30 years ago is the dumbest rationale you could have come up with.

In the ten seconds it took me to compose my last post, I came up with a far better explanation putting zero thought into it.

It's inexcusable that this show is making these kinds of dumb mistakes.

Every time I see that photo, my eyes go straight to that crooked ass rank pin.

The actress playing Raffi (Michelle Hurd) has stated in interviews that the character has had an addiction problem dating back before she met Jean-Luc.

So it wasn't made up by the Trek Fans.

So it doesn't count.

I didn't read the comics and have no intention of doing so, but it annoys me that Picard was ever the captain of another ship. He should have just stayed on the E-E the entire time and, if he got promoted to admiral, swiped the Enterprise back from whoever had it when he wanted to, James T. Kirk-style.
Taking the flagship of the fleet, the Enterprise, to head up a relocation project half the Federation doesn't even want makes no sense. Picard would logically be on a ship that would oversee the Romulus evacuation, and that ship wouldn't be the Enterprise E.
