Considering the Control business in DIS, the various evil androids and AI in TOS and Lore in TNG, wouldn't the Federation have learned a lesson about it already, too? If the Vulcans way back likely before there were really Romulans yet had a bad experience with AI or androids or robots or whatsoever, why not be open about it? That might have stopped some mistakes the Federation has made with unnatural life forms.

If they go the TOS and ENT route and it seems they do, no need for a surgery. Biological speaking Vulcans and Romulans are the same. Surak has only lived 2000 years ago and that was when the Romulans left Vulcan, because they didn't like his logic approach. None of the Romulans we have seen so far has that big TNG bulge thing in their face, so I think the PIC makers chose to ignore the mistake TNG made there.

Maybe that part of vulcan/romulan history is forgotten. Destroyed in the warsbefore surak and the vulcan/romulan split.

Vulcans and Romulans did come from the same root species, with only a minute difference formed due to the lengthy span of time (e.g. Chekov in "The Enterprise Incident", when he was trying to find Spock to beam him away from the Romulan ship and the Romulan Commander in those lovely go-go boots discussing they had the same roots, which means expect a very special miniseries in a couple years where one species takes a ship and flies far far away...)

According to Dr. Crusher in The Enemy there are subtle differences between Vulcans and Romulans. "Too many of them" as she put it, explaining why they couldn't use a blood transfusion from a Vulcan to save the Romulan's life in that episode, why it had to be Worf.

What if the lie goes deeper. What if the Romulans and Vulcans are actually both sub species, a lot depends on exactly when this AI event happened, before, during or after the schism that caused the Romulans to leave.

Well, nothing about our earlier hints into the "differences" or "commonalities" is clear-cut. Chekov did eventually find Spock from amidst Romulans, but what was that "slight difference" that Chekov referred to? A series of parameters amounting to a degree of difference? A single telltale only present in one but not the other? ("You know, Sir, the Romulans being artificial and all, and - gotcha! There's Spock! You were saying, Sir?")

As for "The Enemy", basically all the humanoid species aboard the hero ship seemed to be compatible with Romulans in the one respect that mattered in that particular medical emergency. Vulcans would have been fine, since Crusher was seeking for a donor from among them. But so would humans. Indeed, she started out with humans! Well, at least Crusher says there are "many" of 'em subtle differences. ("Not only do they run on a slightly different clock frequency, and I've never seen an optical subprocessor this complex on a Vulcan, but their spares supply has obviously diverged in the centuries and..." "What are you talking about, Doctor?")

PIC is, happily enough, quite at liberty to dream up weird shit as regards these species. After all, the keywords for both in Trek writing so far are "private", "secretive" and "clamshell".

The chicken thing was a Red Dwarf reference.
