I'm sort of relieved that Quentin Tarantino is probably done with Trek. a Star Trek movie with swearing and gratuitous violence "Pulp Fiction in space" really isn't what comes to mind when I think of Star Trek. Surely the true image of Star Trek is to encourage the vision of a peaceful and knowledgable utopian society, something which isn't quite Tarantino's modus operandi.
I think Tarantino Trek just died.

If he was doing it in TOS era (which is "his" Star Trek by his own admission) then it was less utopian and he might be able to make it work...maybe. Not that I want him involved in Trek. I'm glad his isn't going forward. But, as is often discussed on these boards "utopian" Star Trek was not the premise of TOS.

That is just insane thinking. Just because someone did something great in the past, doesn't mean that a different project you know nothing about whatsoever would have been great in the future.
I admit I haven't seen any Tarantino movies but from what I gather they aren't the kind of movies that seem remotely akin to Star Trek. I'd prefer if someone with an interest and track record in thoughtful science-fiction took over. Directors like Ridley Scott and Denis Villenueve both have an affinity for science-fiction.
If this thread taught me nothing else it taught me that Tarantino is a director that gets a blank check, regardless of the project. I do not understand such thinking.
He operates on '70s standards, and generally insists on it, which gives him the freedom to deliver actual surprises.
That means he has final cut, which more good directors should have.
After INGLORIOUS BASTERDS and OUATIH, he might decide to change history for the better for a third time. Edith Keeler getting to live without dooming the universe is too obvious. More likely he'd massacre all the surviving TOS villains who got away with literal murder. Claudius from BREAD AND CIRCUSES for example. I'd love to see Maab from FRIDAY'S CHID get a Sharon Tate-style reprieve, anyhow.

And if anyone's gonna do the 40something captain banging his 20something shapeshifter subordinate subplot with style, it's Tarantino.
I will admit that the majority Tarantino's movies tend to more entertaining on the second viewing, because then you know certain scenes you're watching do actually, eventually end.
I highly doubt it. I think we need to accept the film side of things is dormant for now, until they can justify the audience need for another movie maybe spinned off one of the current series maybe.
Tarantino's won two, or is it three Best Screenplays? I figure he'll get it a third or fourth time Sunday night. And if ARGO's Hollywood connections gave it Best Picture, HOLLYWOOD could easily do the same.
There might be a LITTLE WOMEN Best Picture upset. (Some BPs don't have nominated firectors when they win, Affleck.)
I'm pulling for Pitt for Best Supporting, though he's truly a co-lead. He got the Howard Rollins/Hailee Steinfeld treatment this year.
Even JOJO RABBIT could pull it off. Obviously Scarlet Johanssen has twice the chance of winning this time.
The two biggest Oscar diversity issues, I feel, are this:
A: Best Picture nominees with foreign casts rarely seem to even nominate their principal leading roles (A PASSAGE TO INDIA, THE LAST EMPEROR, SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, THE LIFE OF PI). I'd love to hear from the Academy why John Lone or Victor Bannerjee didn't make the Best Actor cut over Robin Williams and Jeff Bridges from STARMAN.
B: Of all black female actresses, Only Storm from the X-MEN has been deemed worthy of winning Best Actress in 90 years of Oscars. That's sick in itself.
PS: I need to honestly know why was Angela Bassett NAACP-nominated for Supporting Actress for LONDON HAS FALLEN. And why THE KEEPING ROOM's Muna Otaru was not.

i actually thought Angela Bassett won for her work portraying Tina Turner,
so i google..but no... she was nominated, but no oscar
When Berry won, she reeled off a list of her peers equally or more deserving of the award, but Alfre Woodard was oddly left out. Bassett or Iman would have made a more memorable Storm. No ''gotta''s or ''dammit''s.
I'd like to see Tarantino do the original script for City on the Edge of Forever, and maybe throw his own take in at the end. I somehow feel Harlan E. would approve.
