The unnecessary reboot/remake of the week thread

It's not necessarily rebooting, and it's nothing that hasn't been done before, but lately the studios are sure leaning hard on turning crime-fighting characters from novel franchises into small screen heroes. There's currently Jack Ryan, Harry Bosch and Lincoln Rhyme, and Netflix probably wants to make a series of Spenser movies. We've got Alex Cross, Jack Reacher and Clarice Starling in the pipeline, and now next up, Robert Langdon.

IIRC, wouldn't Clarice Starling have appeared on Hannibal if NBC hadn't canceled it? I remember reading somewhere that Season 4 would have been based on Silence of the Lambs.

Bryan Fuller said he would still love to make season 4 and that they never had the Clarice character rights anyways.

I think it's because standard cop shows have been played out and then you have the added discomfort with people not really looking at cops as good guys in this political climate so your seeing them look for new hooks into the "fighting crime" form of storytelling. Cops going after serial killers or organized crimes etc is a easier sale than cops policing the streets to protect people.

No shortage of more or less regular cop shows on the air, though: The Rookie, Blue Bloods, SWAT (reboot), Chicago PD, Hawaii 5-0 etc.

Many of those are aging shows though. What I am talking about is more in terms of the serious cop show like a NYPD Blue or The Shield or Law and Order. Right now it seems to be either lighthearted buddy stuff,the weird gimmick idea or serial killers. FBI and CIA stuff more than Detectives and uniform cops.

I agree. The whole private eye genre in itself is something I am surprised we don't see more often.

It certainly died off after its golden age of the 70s-80s, but of late has had a resurgence. Currently there are 3 Canadian Private Eye shows, Carter and Private Eyes (with a cover of the Hall and Oates song as its theme song) and a series set in the 20s, the Frankie Drake mysteries. There's also Burden of Truth, which is technically a legal show, but star Kirstin Kruek spends precious little time in the courtroom and most of her time investigating like she's a PI. Stumptown is on ABC as well as the New Magnum PI reboot and Veronica Mars restart. Jason Isaac even had a private eye series, Case Histories, which ran in the UK from 2011-2013 which was decent. JK Rowling's CB Strike has a new series running this year.

About 20 years ago I thought Michael Madsen would’ve made a good Mike Hammer in a tv show.

I’d love to see the Elvis Cole/Joe Pike novels adopted too.

Don't forget there's also the Australian show Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries which was charming as all heck. I think that while it ended with 3 seasons, that it's had a spinoff and a movie coming. I think Frankie Drake was more of direct answer to Miss Fisher's popularity.

How about more crime consultant shows like Bones, Elementary, The Mentalist and Castle? They've already attempted crime-fighting mathematician (successfully) and crime-fighting magician (unsuccessfully). What's next?

We've had shows about medical examiners, forensics teams, and lawyers all solving crimes entirely by themselves when they're just part of the team. I had an idea ages ago that they could try the same thing with the crime scene photographer. I have no idea what would happen beyond that, but as far as I know there's never been a detective story focusing on one.

A crime-fighting taxi-cab driver. The day to day stories he hears while people talk to him gives him special insight in the human mind. New York cops decide to seek out his help to solve a case for someone he once gave a ride to and he does such a good job they keep coming back to him for help.

Now that you posted that I actually recall that show. Well recall as in remembering it existed. Never saw even one episode. With that cast I bet it wasn't even half bad at least as far as formulaic procedural shows go.
