Data was crucial in Picard's dreams as a plot point last week. I understand he can't be in every episode without some reason, and I wouldn't be upset - just a little disappointed - if last week was all we are getting of him, but totally understandable...

However - do you think that's Spiner done for the season?

I think we will see him once more at the end. Wouldn’t surprise me if the season ends with his revival.

That would be fab, but how?

Just from the trailers (which were admitedly all stuff Data has already been seen in), I did get the impression, the dreams would be a running theme in the background of the season, but hey ho.

I also heard a rumour, that a certain letter of the alphabet may be returning in the final episode... But again, just a rumour.

I would guess we'll see him at least one more time, if only because I can't imagine that they'd use pretty much all of Data's scenes in the trailer.

They make a human form of Data, and he just looks like what he does now.
It’ll be similar to that in the novel version.

I can. I mean, I'm not sure they did, but if you want to make a big thing out of a very limited pair of appearances, well, there's a reason trailers have been known to spoil to ridiculous lengths.

That would really disappoint me, and put me off of a second season.

I recall reading that Spiner said the only way he would do the role is if they didn't resurrect him in the end. I do not understand this desire to have things exactly as they were without change. This is not the way the world works. People change. I think its very interesting to see Picard in a different place than he was at the end of Nemesis. I think its very interesting to see that the institution which we've known for 50 years is seeing some cracks. I hate this idea that some fans have that things can never change.

I think Data will stay dead. I don't think bringing him back would suit any purpose for *this* story. But I've been wrong before.

Picard mourning Data has been a central point of his life for two decades and is the heart and soul as to why he's so hellbent to solve this mystery and such. Having Data suddenly revived but as a biosynth but still looking the same would seem...weak. It's a bit like how TSFS kind of took the guts out of the heroic sacrifice of Spock at the end of TWOK...

    HOWEVER

IF they did, and Data was brought back as a BioSynth..presumably with aging..that means Brent could play Data again since now Data would be an aging character, not one who is technically supposed to always look exactly as he did in Encounter at Farpoint.

Data aging is already built into his design. It's mentioned in TNG "Inheritance."

Odd that Brent seems to hinge his opposition to playing Data to "playing a character that shouldn't age when I do"

I got the impression that Juliana Tainer had an aging program, but Data didn't.

I'm not aware of any reference to him actually having one, anyway.

Geordi said, "It's part of her aging program. Not only does she age in appearance like Data, her vital signs change too."

Agreed. But it also contradicts Time's Arrow where Data speculates on never dying and seeing all those around him dying. Is the inference from Inheritance, that eventually Data would die of old age?

It would seem so. However it's worth noting, if we're going to look at the time frames involved..Inheritance was a Season 7 episode where Times Arrow is The 5/6 cliffhanger/opener..

So I guess would that make Inheritance the last word on that so as a result it's the true-er canon? My guess is they inserted that line in anticipation of Brent playing Data not only in Generations (which had already begun pre-production when Season 7 was airing) but in subsequent movies every few years and knowing that Brent would begin to fairly rapidly show his age as he hit the magic 50 number.

Well, Spiner has a certain overall idea about how his character should develop, but he may not remember all these little details. And it might be reasonable to think that Data would be designed to only "age" up to a certain point, or that he would "age" at a much slower pace than humans, since he would probably continue to function for hundreds of years, if not longer.
