The only thing Picard has to do with the Abrams films is the supernova that sets events in motion.

 

I just joined on Wednesday.

My favorite part about Star Trek is Spock and his struggle between the two sides of his personality.

Needless to say, my favorite season is TOS, but I have also watched the later movies and episodes.

I read a lot of the Star Trek books with my dad.

I am looking forward to learning and sharing more about Star Trek through this board.

 

That isn't true so far. The visuals, the story-telling style, the supernova... the fact that the main writers are ALL from the Abrams franchise of Star Trek rather than the pre-Abrams franchise. The closest you have is Kirsten Beyer, who wrote Voyager novels.

And no one will convince me that Discovery is not in the Abrams universe... for oodles of reasons... writers, style, story-telling, looks, sounds, and some other stuff like no longer being a medium to hard science-fiction like the pre-Abrams Star Trek. And that is where Kirsten Beyer has done her work since.

You know... so yeah. By episode two of Star Trek: Picard I can see the Star Trek franchise died sometime between 2002 and 2007.. and really... its not even the fact that its a reboot... TNG was a reboot, that was cool. Enterprise was also kinda a reboot and alternate storyline, which was also mostly cool.

So yeah... unless something really wows me and grabs my attention I suspect I will be canceling my CBS all access by the end of the month,

 

Discovery co-creator Bryan Fuller actually wrote a number of Voyager episodes. And there is only one Abramsverse writer working on the current shows: Alex Kurtzman.

I’ll always love Star Trek for being my gateway to sci-fi, but it and its spinoffs are about as soft sci-fi as you can get.

 

There are things on the Star Trek franchise that unquestionably is... hmm... not based in science for one reason or another, or candidly is executed as a script very poorly... but most of it is based on some science that is understood.

The warp drive, anti-matter matter reactors, even possibly ftl communication through quantum entanglement... but the spore drive is literally pretty laughable. The idea of another dimension to the universe that would even allow for it is pretty laughable...

Calling Star Trek 'soft as it gets'... is I think candidly poor science literacy and education.

Futurama is a very good example, in virtually all the meanings and execution thereof, of a soft science fiction. Just because a science fiction is soft, medium or hard... doesn't mean its good or bad on those merits alone. But Star Trek has a history of trying to follow the science. In the first several episodes they mention lasers, when it was mentioned to them the issues with that, they changed it. And really that is what science fiction is supposed to be... a gateway to think about science and technology in new ways...

The newer Star Treks dont do that... and to steer out of the discussion of Star Trek's TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT scale of science fiction hardness... let me rephrase it like this. They do very poorly the most basic thing science fiction is supposed to do in my view... be about actual science and technology even if only very loosely. When you start diverting away from that, like where blackholes are time machines but also not, you have left science fiction in my view of it... you have gone into fantasy. Which fantasy is cool... its just not science fiction...

I realize I never introduced myself in this thread!

I am a relatively new Star Trek fan. I had never seen any Star Trek until the J.J. Abrams reboot movies came out in my early twenties. For a long time, those were the only ones I watched, but when I was in grad school I had a random assortment of roommates and one of them was a huge Star Trek fan. She encouraged me to watch some of the original Star Trek shows so I did! I decided to start with TOS since I was already a Kirk/Spock fan and promptly fell super in love with TOS...and when that was over I moved onto the Animated series. For a long time after I first watched those shows, I couldn't bring myself to watch any other Star Trek because I didn't think I would enjoy anything without a Spock character in it.

That refusal to watch anything else went on until last year (2019) when randomly Netflix suggested I watched Star Trek Voyager and on a whim I decided to watch it. It quickly catapulted to my favorite Star Trek. It also started me on what my mother would undoubtedly call my downward spiral into obsessive fan territory (which I am totally okay with and part of why I joined this site). I am currently on a mission to watch all the Star Trek shows in Prime timeline chronological order. I have watched Enterprise and Discovery so far and I am about halfway through TOS. A part of me is a little sad that at some point there will be no "new" Star Trek for me to watch because I will have seen everything but I will cross that bridge once I get to it.

Anywho, I am happy to be on site where there are a ton of Star Trek fans since no one in my immediate friends and family are Star Trek fans (other than my former roommate but she lives far away). I am a pretty easy-going/easy-to-please fan I've realized in that I enjoy all the shows I've watched so far, even ones that are typically heavily criticized by fans. <3

 

Nice to meet you, RocketQueen. Nothing to get sad about, over the next 50 years you can watch them over and over again...wait, I'm talking about myself, again.

 

Heh, I've seen all of TOS too many times to count, and too many of the TNG episodes multiple times.

Watch DS9. It's best.

 

Thanks everyone! Lovely to meet all of you! I am someone who watches my favorite shows to death, so you are right Henoch, I shouldn't get too sad about finishing all the series/movies. I'll just start the Prime timeline over again. XD I am looking forward to getting to DS9, Relayer1, my friend who is a diehard TNG fan said that she thought DS9 had some of the best writing (even though TNG was still her number 1).

 

I'm new here, thanks for having me. I have enjoyed Star Trek since I first found it as a kid in the '80s. Currently I am looking to pick up the novels again, and feed my knowledge. I like the TOS era and the TOS Movie Era.

I'm mostly a lurker, this board is way too active to keep up on. Plus I like to stick to the TOS side of things, and just sneak into the new Picard stuff... which I haven't seen yet, but am likely to be swayed.
