I’ve been waiting so long for this day http://blog.trekcore.com/2020/01/star-trek-discovery-funko-pop-figures-announced/
Aren't most of these things the same oversimplified head with just different paint jobs on the body and inaccurate proportions on purpose? I understand why people buy action figures and busts, but these things.... ugh
Yeah, not my thing either. Rather have something with a lot more actual value to it. 'sides, my Trek collection is 50+years overwhelming already. (and the Saru one is really ugly)
My partner has these all around the house; would be nice to add some Discovery ones to the mix. Saru is a poor likeness, though, even by Pop standards.
*sides with everyone else who complains* I like Funko POPs, but these two? Naaah. (Not based on characters I find particularly awesome.) I'd prefer a Lorca one. Or a Pike one. Would definitely buy either one of those!
Different hair and clothes too. I have the 6 original Orphan Black clones. They really do look like the characters they're supposed to be. Cosima has glasses, one of the Rachels has a pencil in her eye, etc. These 2 DSC look about right, but I've seen some that don't look even close.
These aren’t the finished designs. They are placeholders. I personally love Pop Vinyls. In the next release, I hope we get Georgiou, Lorca and Tilly. They often do alternate versions of the same character, so both Mirror and Prime Georgiou would be cool, plus Red Angel Burnham when they get to S2 releases. I’m sure they’ll do Picard series eventually too.
I like the Burnham one but the Saru one needs a better design. I would love to see a full set of Discovery pops. The only ones I have are Chekov and the random TOS Klingon.
I wouldn’t count on a Series 2. They didn’t do a 2nd series of TOS or TNG. Both releases are missing main characters, in TOS case it’s Bones, Uhura, Sulu and Checkov. For TNG they didn’t make either of the Crushers. They did make a series for Star Trek Beyond that did include every main character. It was weird buying a Checkov so soon after Yelchin passed away.
McFarlane has got to be struggling in some way. Their production is slowing down and it is surprising to me. I think they lost a couple of licenses and that impacted business.
Esp. when it was the ironic/tragic "Chekov (Survival Gear)". "Chekov (Survival Gear) Pop" by Ian McLean, on Flickr It had been intended that T'Kuvma was to have been a major ongoing character, so their first-announced Burnham & T'Kuvma wave had to be reconsidered. Then they followed the Kirk & Picard wave with an announced Burnham & Spock wave - but a TOS Spock, because DSC Spock had not yet even been announced as a major character (who would eventually enter DSC's second season). So frustrating. I hope it wasn't wholesaler disinterest that caused the line to be so neglected.
Burnham and Saru by Ian McLean, on Flickr (and another Doug Jones incarnation, the creature from "The Shape of Water". I recently bought the Silver Surfer, too.) The customiser in me had to create more: Custom Pops featuring... Culmets by Ian McLean, on Flickr And here's Ryn by Ian McLean, on Flickr
