I guess one downside of having a distinctive voice like Sir Patrick's is that he couldn't easily be dubbed for French lines. They should have had a massive audition in France for a Patrick Stewart sound alike.

At the same time, we can't have the Captain of the Enterprise sounding like Gerard Depardieu or Maurice Chevalier.

Shows like My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic sometimes have two actors voicing one character - a speaking voice and a singing voice.

In Germany, when a dubbed anglophone character is singing in English or speaking a third language (eg spy movies), the actor’s original voice is used. The change of timbre can be jarring.

Either way, the show is not so much about Jean-Luc Picard as it is about Sir Patrick Stewart playing Picard, so I’d guess they won’t replace his voice if they can help it.

Awesome!
That Alienvers logo must be Andoria. ;)
Always a pleasure to hear him say/be called Pee-KAH (instead of pee-KAHD). #pedanticme
Picard sounds a lot angrier in French when he speaks with the admiral.

I think for most of his life, or at least since his first day at Starfleet Academy, Picard has spoken English (or Standard, whatever). French may have been the language of his ancestors and he may have spoken it as a young child, but after all this time, it might not be his first language anymore, IMO.

Sir Patrick's French IS rather atrocious but I'm giving it a pass because they're actually making an effort to portray Jean-Luc as the bilingual man that he is. TNG didn't do that nearly as often as I'd have liked.

And really, the scene has so much going on for Sir Patrick - he has to act with a dog, make sure the scene goes smoothly AND speak in a language that isn't his own, using words that he had to learn by heart and very exactly, including their tricky pronunciation (yes, French is a tricky language sometimes). He's doing absolutely fine in my book.

I've seen FC in French, it's hilarious!
Data did a very good job in Time's Arrow, not sure if that was Spiner though.

What's the political tone of the 3 episodes? They haven't been released, yet, but the political "dark-web" has already been bashing ST:PCRD and Patrick Stewart's stance. There were comments like:

--lots of "leftie" views, --the bad guy is modeled after Trump, --patronizing political attitude
The haters never let "facts" get in the way of bashing a show they haven't even watched!

For the reason that we now know Picard left Starfleet, I’d be curious as to what Janeway did, if faced with a similar dilemma. She strikes me more as the type that would’ve just stayed in the system, maybe challenging some stuff, but staying in it nonetheless.

Hi,

I just wanted to say „thanks“ to everyone who contributed to this topic and making me feel even more excited about the show. :)

It‘s been a while since I have been looking forward so much to new ST and I can barely wait for next week.

(Btw, I think I had an account here ages ago but can‘t remember username or email adress. I have been pondering about joining again since Discovery came out but Picard finally made me do it. )

The Romulans post-nova had tattoos in 2009

Ah sorry. Thought you may have been referencing that, but wasn’t sure if I’d just missed a conversation point in the episode.

No tattoos in this one. We can either assume that ST09 was a one and done design change, or perhaps they’ll incorporate them in the future, given Kurtzman has already said that we will see different types of Romulan appearances across the season.
