Love it. For all his fame, Joaquin still seems a little uneasy being in that room with all those big names. Hope he wins the Oscar so that he and Ledger can join Brando and Deniro for winning an academy award for playing the same character.

I still think the best speech of the night was this one...

Eh, kinda sorta. Brando and DeNiro were playing the same character at different ages. Ledger’s Joker and Phoenix’s are really two different characters. Joker isn’t in the Nolan continuity.

Oh yes, it was--and the nervous/uncomfortable looks on all of those faces made the show, especially when he referenced Ronan Farrow's investigations into widespread sexual abuse at NBC and certain studios, Jeffrey Epstein (a man who had many ties to the entertainment business), and the phony woke/climate platform held by the left wing leaders of companies like Apple and Amazon, yet they have manufacturing in sweatshops (that are notorious for human rights and environmental law violations) while they're lecturing everyone in the U.S, on how to live. The guilt on the faces of his targets...their nervous eyes darting all about was the best awards show moment in decides.

Nah, as usual WB will learn the wrong lessons from this and screw things up as usual. Feige isn't shallow enough to try and do an MCU take on this either.

Still, it does show that Awards groups are more willing to notice films that insult the genre (Phoenix and Phillips' comments about how they openly hijacked the Joker name) rather than be unashamed about it.

So doing good partly is worse than doing 100% bad, good to know.

I expected your tears to come a-flowin' in here.
Translation: No MCU performer wins anything, so you--in predictable fashion--try to spin that into a negative.

No, he's more concerned with tossing largely forgettable, glorified coloring books on screen.

I'm merely pointing out that given their track record, DC will screw up as it usually does. And Phoenix only got noticed because he and Phillips had to keep going out of their way to admit that they weren't doing a real Joker movie and hijacked the name for attention. If not for that, they'd never have been noticed.

That, and they'd wanted to give Phoenix an award for years. So even though all he did was laugh a lot, lose weight and generally just overact they thought with all the publicity they could sneak his pity award in. Given how he used that exposure to start cursing and making people uncomfortable, the Academy won't repeat that mistake.

No different from how DiCaprio got HIS Pity award for wrestling a CGI bear and not act.

Being unashamed of the source material, as opposed to making Taxi Driver wannabes.

    Nah, just an unashamed pond.

An unashamed pond full of shit.

I'm sorry, I didn't actually mean that, but you make it so damned hard to resist.

S'Okay, I had to put up with stuff like that from 2008-2016. It's nothing new.

    Undoubtedly.

No even close to reality, but I will let you continue to see the world through Disney/Marvel branded glasses.

Unsubstantiated BS. You are the only one making that claim about the celebration, nomination and winning selection. Its your only way (although a failed one) of explaining why Joker was the complete opposite of what you were hoping it would be: a failure. It was a massive critical and financial success, and Phoenix has been recognized for his brilliant take on the Joker. I'm sure you were fantasizing that someone such as Brolin should have been nominated and won for cartoon Thanos, but let's get serious.

The MCU has barely respected the source material, instead, it has spattered screens with Power Rangers-esque noise in one copy+paste flick after another with few exceptions.

    If you're ashamed of comics.

Look at their track record, every time they have a good thing going DC always screws up. Burton started out good and WB's constant interference led to Batman and Robin. Nolan gave them their rep back and they botched it with MOS, BvS and Justice League. They'll take whatever goodwill from Joker and screw it up again.

Nope. They admitted that if they could've made the movie without any Joker stuff they would have. But they knew it would fail without that.

Hardly the only one, just the only one speaking. And Phoenix and Phillips' own comments support me.

It wasn't a critical success, and the Awards folks thought he deserved his pity award after years of being "snubbed" enough thought all he did for this flick was lose weight and laugh a lot. And of course it blew up in their faces with how he used it to complain about things.

Thanos took more work than laughing a lot and losing weight, that's for sure.

Better than DC does. The MCU wouldn't take Captain America and make him a Heroin Addicted Jazz critic.

This continuing dialogue is the most tiresome and repetitive one on these BBS. Why don’t the two of you block each other instead of subjecting the rest of us to the same points over and over again?

...the same nonsensical line no one has ever bought from you and never will. Its patently absurd.

Aside from your comment about the Burton-Schumacher series, the rest of your statement is utter nonsense

Yes, you are the only one.

Lies will never lift you out of the MCU-defensive hole you've dug for yourself.

An obvious CG character with an actor providing a gravelly voice to simpleminded dialogue required no work at all.

    Nope.

I am no supporter of Anwar but Joker had mixed reviews. 69% on RT. The audiences on the other hand absolutely loved it - 88% on RT and an amazing 8.7/10 on IMDB. Just for the record, the nearly undisputed best comic book movie of all time The Dark Knight has a 9.0 on IMDB. My favorite MCU movie Iron Man 1 has 7.9 and the MCU movie most commonly mentioned as being best Winter Soldier is at 7.7.

Since it doesn't look like my suggestion is going to be heeded, I've just used the ignore button twice, never having used it before. i wouldn't mind but they do this in so many comic book threads and it's about as illuminating as two drunks shouting "no, YOUR mum" at each other.

Caught this now that it's on video, definitely a very Scorsese style take on the material with its 70/80s style dirty NY take on Gotham and generous helpings of Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy. Maybe a bit too familiar in that sense but I can see for people who aren't into movies and/or didn't grow up in that time that it would be more fresh.

Still saying that, it's well done and Joaquin Phoenix delivers a solid performance. The colors are refreshing too, vibrant without going teal/orange or that neon pastel you see now, but a nice natural and rich look. The knee jerk violence when it comes is effective.

It's an interesting character study, for me I see it as an Elseworlds kind of deal and I think it presents itself as such. I don't think it's supposed to be the mainstream Joker so it doesn't bother me that in this film it's not. Audiences appear to be game and it doesn't seem that it's preventing more traditional fare from being made so I don't see the harm and it expands the field and possibly opens the door to taking on less conventional properties that don't comfortably fit the mold of the big boys.

    Nah, fits this perfectly.

Nope, after Donner and Reeves gave them a great Superman base to work with, they screwed it up with 3 and 4. After Burton gave them a good start, they booted him off and screwed it up. After Nolan helped them out of the mess they found themselves in, they screwed it up with the DCEU.

Just the only one talking. I'm saying what's being thought.

I'm not in a hole, and all I got is truth.

Which took more effort to create and act through compared to laughing a lot.

Which is still more than laughing a lot and losing weight.

No, MCU wouldn't sell out like that and corrupt their characters.

I was around in that era, and understand your reference, but this film definitely has its own voice. It channels what was becoming the urban dystopia of modern America (that--in reality--is still growing out of control) which was effectively integrated into the ways that environment ends up being trampling a man (psychologically speaking) until he's turned into a creature like Joker.

Oh yes, there was a lot of visual as well as plotting strengths to the film, and the violence was never there just to be there. Everything had a valid purpose.

You are right--its not, and audiences had no problem with that. No one was wringing their hands about this Joker being somewhat different that the comic versions--which have also seen numerous changes over the past 80 years.

    Well said.

Looks to me like they've finally gotten their shit together, since Justice League we've gotten Aquaman, Shazam, and Joker, which have all gotten a positive reaction, and judging by what we've seen that winning streak is probably going to be continuing with Birds of Prey (and the Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) and Wonder Woman 1984.
