Regardless of what might have happened behind the scenes, again, the number one thing that is important to Disney is whether or not the movie makes a profit. Yesterday, The Rise of Skywalker crossed the $400 million domestic line. The film has now made $815.4 globally. While it does not look like it will pass The Last Jedi, $1 billion is not too far away. I'm guessing its going to land right around Rogue One's total.

Which is what I would expect, honestly.

Me too. Yes, both ROTJ and ROTS did better then ESB and AOTC respectively, but there's honestly no way to predict these things from our vantage point. What I can say is there is no way that TRoS or TLJ would match TFA. That's just crazy, uninformed, overly high expectations.

Big info dump today about Disney being assholes to J.J during the movie and why they want to buy Bad Robot (not because they like it just to screw WB). I like the movie overall but I'm getting really tired of Studio's trying to become writers, producers and directors at the same time instead of trusting people they hire to do it.

Seriously how many Directors have Disney burnt this decade? at this rate Mickey himself will be the only one left to direct.

So the finale of the greatest film franchise ever..a 40 year journey coming to end .. not only fails to come close to Endgame numbers, but is dwarfed by the previous film.

Kind of what I expected.. but if this doesn't confirm that the fanbase is split, I don't know what does

No, it just confirms that the repeat business (which is a great indicator of how well received a big holiday movie is) isn't all that great. In the end, The Rise of Skywalker will have sold less tickets (both domestically and globally) then Rogue One and will fail to finish in the the top 5 most successful movies of 2019. Commercially that still counts as a success, but culturally... Speaks volumes about the current overall state of the franchise as a cultural phenomenon.

Yes, because well-seasoned, writers, directors and producers just have things happen with their scripts, and have no intent behind the characters they create. Not buying that. If they had a definite intent with Rey, they did with Finn. This was no production of random chance and accidents. No one is unaware of how they write characters, and the way they are meant to be presented and seen.
Yes, obviously they know what is happening with the characters and the movie, but they could have known what was going on and still not realized that people would consider what they were doing with the character racist. I have seen nothing to make me believe that they were intentionally racist, and just saying that they wrote the character is not enough.

WAIT A MINUTE!!! The fanbase is SPLIT?!? I had no IDEA!!!
The fanbase has been split for over two decades. The big schism happened when The Phantom Menace was declared the worst thing since Hitler, and everyone who didn't outright hate it was labeled a fake Star Wars fan. Not that it was the first time the fanbase waged a civil war, though.

Not being funny. Has there ever been a time when a fan base hasn't been split? In the internet era? Obviously, you don't count A New Hope, but I remember fandom being quite split on The Empire Strikes Back, and even more so with Return of the Jedi and then the prequels.

In the same vein, Star Trek fandom has been split since, at least, 1987 with the premiere of TNG. Though I remember fans writing in fanzines back in 1982 that The Wrath of Khan would be quickly forgotten because it wasn't "Star Trek".

Dude, I was being sarcastic. Of course I am aware of how split the fandom is.

People have their opinions of what they like should be. We all do. Some of us can stomach what is actually produced better than others. But it never fails, when the next big thing comes around, more than likely, fans will say, "Yeah, so that thing we hated before? Not that bad."

Um...you may want to look at the Box Ofice trend. While TRoS won't come close to Endgame numbers worldwide - it looks like it's on track to bring in a bigger Box office total than the waste of celluloid Rian Johnson crapfest that was TLJ. ;)

Yep. We're seeing it with the prequel trilogy, and the Berman-era shows in the Star Trek universe.
