Was Holdo originally supposed to be Sabine Wren?

Morpheus 02

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
I thought this when Last Jedi came out, but seeing it again... was Vice Admiral Holdo originally supposed to be Sabine Wren...but they chickend out the last minute (or just made some other last minute decision)?

I mean the purple hair, the line " Godspeed... REBELS!" and just about the right age?

Seems like a perfect fit.

With the relative lack of significant Rebels cameos....and yet supposedly important to the SW universe, this would have been great.

What do you all think?

Yeah, no. Nobody is going to handle Filoni’s characters fates except Filoni.

Which is a shame, because I was avoiding a lot of pre-release info for the movie for spoiler reasons, so during the last big PR push in the weeks before the release and people started talking a lot about this Admiral Holdo person I hadn't known of, I kept reading it as "Admiral Hondo."

Vice Admiral Holdo was a character featured in the book Leia: Princess Of Alderaan. The book was released in September 2017 and since all the new books are considered canon, maybe they wanted someone from Leia’s past in the movie.

Princess of Alderaan came out just a few months before The Last Jedi, so Holdo would have already been created for TLJ long before it was written.
As for her being Sabine, I really can't see it, we never really got any indication in Rebels that her and Leia were that close.

Did Sabine even interact with her in the one episode Leia showed up? Pretty sure the only scene they were both in was the mission briefing and that was a group discussion.

So yeah, I'm going with "no". Aside from hair dye and approximate age, Holdo has nothing in common with Sabine.
Indeed, the mutiny plot simply wouldn't work with Sabine since half of Poe's problem was that she didn't appear to be a competent military leader, just some old rebellion diplomat/bureaucrat. Sabine on the other hand is a Mandalorian. Ain't nobody questioning her strategic or tactical prowess.

If there were ever any meaningful intent to use Sabine in TLJ in Holdo's role, wouldn't they have gone looking for an Asian actress? Laura Dern's a fine actress and all, but I don't see no one convincing me she's Asian. Besides, the rank Admiral implies naval service, and Sabine never showed a particular aptitude for naval warfare. So, yeah, going with a No on this one as well.
