I think what you're saying is, and correct me if I'm wrong, that if the movie isn't a good enough story, it won't do as well. I think that's far more likely a cause than sexism, as other women led movies have shown. Wonder Woman was a good movie. It did well.

I think they should market it as any movie that starred a man--and not play up the gender thing. In Natasha's case, it never was a thing at all. She's a hero that happens to be female. Her gender should have nothing to do with anything.

I don't get what she meant either, but I'm just saying what she said.

I am so disappointed that they decided to do a "yet another adventure" type movie with this character. She was a lot more interesting at other stages of her career. Her origin would make for a good movie, but that's already done by Red Sparrow. Her reason for defecting would have been very interesting. Yet this is the MCU, and they know that the moment they stray too far from The Avengers they risk losing interest, so here we are - getting a Black Widow CGI action-fest. Yay...

Ah, the good ol' "judge the film before seeing ir" post!

Based on the nature of the reunion we see in the trailer, I would be very surprised if the film doesn't cover the reason why she defected and her origin, just not in the traditional matter.

Wow that was a great trailer. I was surprised Red Guardian and the other Black Widow are her allies, I was expecting them to the bad guys alongside Taskmaster.

It was a great trailer until they showed her flying through the sky shooting a machine gun. They had a chance to do something different, but decided to make an MCU movie instead. Oh well.

I mean sure, I'll be there opening weekend. I just had some hopes that it won't be iron Man part 25. Oh well.

Having Black Widow do Black Widow type things is hardly a reason to NOT see this movie. I will follow with interest. I don't believe that Black Widow is really a character that would be worthy of her own movie, especially given the events of Endgame and Infinity War.

Not a larger than life enough character in my opinion. But ScarJo of course is an A lister, so her name is bigger than the character, which is unusual for comic book movies.

It will be very interesting to see how it goes.

I got definite Winter Soldier vibes from it, with early Bourne-type scenes, uneasy reunions, culminating in more typical Marvel action sequences. Whether or not the final product resembles this, I don’t know but it certainly looked at least as good as I’d expected.

According to Io9's breakdown of the trailer, quite a few of the earlier parts take place in Budapest, so I'm thinking that could indicate there is a decent chance we might found out exactly what happened last time she was there.

It will have potential to stand out if it has the tone and characterization of the MCU's greatest film--Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

With Black Widow, I was saying I think it might not do as well as other Marvel stuff because of the type of movie it is, i.e. not the typical Marvel factory superhero stuff. If it doesn't do absolutely boffo numbers I was just saying it may be because of that and not simply that audiences wouldn't accept a female lead.

Actually, after watching the trailer again it's not as unconventional as I thought on first impression. I don't know if it's a good thing or not that Atomic Blonde and Red Sparrow have already mined some of that territory.

Personally, I'm intrigued but not quite sure. Black Widow isn't really a character I care a whole lot about but if it's a good solid movie I'll check it out. The trailer looks pretty good though and is offsetting my indifference to the character.

I was mentioning Charlie's Angels as well in the post you quoted and think what sunk that movie were other factors than just because the cast were women. I don't really want to derail further into that one though.

Atomic Blonde and Red Sparrow got to mine that territory in part because Perlmutter (and others?) made us wait.
And I speak as someone who enjoyed Atomic Blonde as a story in its own right.

Still annoyed at the delay until after Endgame. It may well have undermined this.

I thought that it was a really great trailer. The action looked good, I'm glad we're going to get some more concrete backstory stuff for BW, and Red Guardian looks like he'll be a fun character. Fingers crossed that we get to see some more of the Soviet Super Soldiers in the movie (I would lose my mind, in a good way, if Natasha starts fighting a guy, and then the guy turns into a bear because the guy was actually Ursa Major).

Overall, it looks like it will be a good movie. Its not really my most anticipated MCU film, but it looks like it will be very good.

If they sneak Vanguard, Darkstar or Ursa Major into the mix, I will be surprised.

Damn, that looks fantastic. Loved the music, the comedic bits, the badass action, and the cast. Even the graphics transitions for the Marvel and Black Widow logos were cool. Can't wait to see Taskmaster in action and what happened in Budapest. Definitely hyped.

Black Widow movie about Black Widow. Made by Marvel. What more can you ask for?

Ok, I know it's maybe not going to be something completely different and daring to break the norm of the other billion dollar successful movies made by marvel but I don't think they got the "it has to be different memo" when they were making this. I imagine any shift in how these movies will be made is going to happen in future. Not with a character who represented the first 10 years of marvel movies.

I think that's fair too, but it's also not a sign of sexism. It's a different movie, necessitated by Natasha being a human.

That's how I feel too. I almost feel like this movie is being made because of ScarJo rather than because of the character, which may affect things too. Black Widow is not a stand alone type character. But they have a lot of built up good will, and I have no reason to avoid this movie, so why not?

I had absolutely no interest in that movie. It was also poorly promoted. But there were turn offs, like Bosley just being a code name rather than just some guy who works with them, among others. But that wouldn't have stopped me. I really liked the McG first movie. I never really watched the TV show, but the movie was well cast, had good action, and the story worked. And it was a hit. I think the McG version proves just how wrong Elizabeth Banks was in her comments.

I don't expect Black Widow to have this problem, but if it fails, sexism has nothing to do with it. But I don't think it WILL fail because the team behind it has a strong record.
