A rather random and silly observation...

If K-9 from "Doctor Who" were "upgraded" to have a truly android (uh, "canoid"?) exterior indistinguishable from that of a real dog, he would almost certainly have to be a Corgi. If nothing else, it would lead to some freakishly cool sequences, like something from "Ghost in the Shell", the "skin" and "fur" around his ears folding like umbrellas to reveal parabolic scanners, his "nose" detaching to extend upon a telescoping rod to "analyze" objects, his jaw hyper-extending so that a beam emitter can emerge to zap things, etc.

I'd always thought K-9 might be more like a Scottish Terrier! I'd never seen Doctor Who before Nine but discovered K-9. He reminded me (although I'm sure the oppsoite is true- he probably was the inspiration!) of the little wheeled toaster-bots on the Death Star in StarWars ANH! I like to imagine they're the cutest PaDDs ever!

Originally, I was going to say that Star Wars was the inspiration, probably due to the popularity of R2-D2. While the DW serial aired during October 1977, a bit of casual research (Googling) revealed the episodes were recorded during April of '77, a couple of months before Star Wars debuted. So, the question arises; exactly when was the K-9 prop considered? Obviously, there had to be some "lead time" to build the "robot" before the episodes were actually recorded. How much was known about Star Wars before it the silver screen? How "early" was there "buzz" about the movie? Until those first couple of weeks of screen time and box office sales, there was still concern the movie might flop.

This may be a case of random synchronicity. There may have been a bit of "talk" within the entertainment industry about this eclectic, "serial inspired" space opera, but the BBC probably had the idea of a robot character already in mind. Now, it is possible the success of Star Wars influenced the DW production team to keep K-9 as recurring character, rather than as a "one off" as was originally planned. (Well, supposedly. I've read differing accounts that K-9 was always intended to travel in the TARDIS, partly to amortize its construction costs. Frankly, I don't know which to believe.)

The upgraded K-9 could fly and the MSE6 repair droids do squeak like a mouse. The crossover resulting droid would be a flying batbot?

Well - if you call a "Batbot" - it has to have a "Bat" logo and then you get in trouble with DC Comics and...nevermind...

K9 was originally a one-story thing, but it was decided to keep it on (partly to spread the cost across several stories). It was a human scientist's creation, but he couldn't take K9 back to Earth at the end of the story, so the Doctor took him.

Meant to comment upon this earlier. I can see the logic in that comparison. His neutral grey metal surface suggests dark fur and while not floor length as in a "show cut" Maltese, A "Scotty" dog, when groomed to breed standards, does kinda' resemble the trapezoid casing of K-9.

Yeah, your idea makes more sense than mine. I gladly concede!

I’ve actually only seen K-9 in the episode where he lives with Mary Jane Smith and her son.

MY mind...precise?! Far, far from it! I could not begin to compete with the fans on this board on any bloody subject. Their knowledge for both the profound and the trivial makes me look, to use the term Dr. Morbius used in "Forbidden Planet" like "a low grade moron". Without tools like Google, I'd just embarrass myself that much more than I already do.

Still, thanks you for the kind thought. It does lift my spirits.
