Kyle was in red coveralls for a few episodes and was coming up through the ranks to engineering and may have replaced DeSalle for all we know but if Chekov really was on the ship during the events of Space Seed then why didn't we see him in coveralls too?

Ryan, Connors and Leslie were the Enterprise's barbershop quartet. They had a fourth, Jennings, but he died in an unfortunate accident involving a hard boiled egg and a spoon while wearing a red shirt. ;)

Leslie was first seen in a blue shirt, actually. As a security guard in "Where No Man Has Gone Before." And he wore an olive drab jumpsuit as Connors in "Mudd's Women."

And Kyle wore a blue jumpsuit at least once, although I can't recall which episode(s) now. But the nutty thing is that Kyle and Leslie don't just switch once and that's it. They go back and forth among the various uniform styles and colors.

Oh, yeah, well who knows what was going on in WNMHGB. Totally different unis. Kyle was in a blue jumpsuit in Space Seed for some reason, I believe. Other than that they almost always wore red after a couple of initial greengolds.

I may have mentioned this before, but here goes...

I saw some kind of new show with Mike Rowe where he visited an aircraft carrier to work with the sailors and pilots. He had to switch shirts something like eight times, in order to integrate into the group doing his job. For safety on the loud, active flight deck, color-coded shirts and hand-signals were combined to communicate with the pilots. I assume something like this is happening with Leslie, Lt. Kyle, Brent and other named background characters with minimal speaking roles.

Watching "Assignment Earth", I saw Leslie in a Command gold shirt, (next to Brent in a Command gold shirt), and then Leslie in a red jumpsuit in Engineering in the next shot, all during a Kirk's address to the crew over the intercom! Based in that, plus the apparent "death" of Leslie in "Obession" (Kirk calls Leslie that out loud), there would have to be at least 3 character played by that actor, two of whom are twins! lol ;)

Somebody update the applicable entry in Memory Alpha, fast ;)

    Marsden is very sad.
What you do not know and now must be told.... Leslie was part of Star Fleets final round of cloning experiments.

There was a debated attempt at creating additional crew for dangerous work through cloning, most were unsuccessful but Kirk took on the final survivors in order to give them a chance to live as people rather then experimental subjects.

You know, that's exactly the slant that I needed to finish off a fanfic story I started ages ago... :techman:

Kirk has sympathies to clones since he is one, too. ;)

Kyle was used where needed on the ship and read the rota issued by Captain Kirk and changed uniforms to whatever job he was assigned! :techman:
