Michael B. Jordan as the Man Of Steel?

Nobody reads newspapers anymore except in comic book worlds. Nobody is going to mind if they pretend in movies or tv that people still just like hom many plot issues could be solved by using their phone or common sense. Jason

It's just an internet expression, not trying to be rude.
And Internet expressions are never rude? You really don't see anything aggressive in calling someone "destroyed"? Okayyyyy....

Interesting, but the point was Kal-el doesn't need to land on a Reservation to grow up on a farm. Which I think still stands.
Fair, but I doubt such a movie would then spend time on a complex picture of a typical farm's economic challenges. Anyhow, not making any sweeping argument here, just an observation. (And I still think a Native American Kal-El could be pretty damn cool.) :)

Didn't say they have to be raised by white people? I said you're gonna have issues if you just skirt around racism when they grow up in a rural area of America on a farm. I just don't think making Superman black is a good idea, just doesn't make sense to me as a symbol. A black man running around defending America and the truth/justice? Not for me.

Who says you have to skirt around it? Superman can have his issues with racism growing and still attempt to defend the "idea" of America, even though he didn't live it growing up.

One can see and experience the flaws of America, and still be for the idea of it.

I'd rather have Cavill back than anything. As a second choice, Jordan would be good.

Offhand can't think of anyone else who'd be close.

There've been a lot of Kryptonian Supermen in the last seventy years. If the guy wears the cape, has the powers and does what Superman does, he's Superman.

It would certainly be disingenuous to ignore the racism. Look at the response when a black man took a knee during the national anthem to protest racism in America.

If handled well—a good script, a good director, with insight in what it is like growing up Black in America, Jordan would be great.

But given all the land mines a corporation like Warners would have to negotiate—and seeing how fanboys reacted to Rey—I doubt this will come to pass.

Not sure exactly what that jumble of a first sentence means but

Because the relatable, black experience isn't being raised on a farm with white people

As @BillJ said you don't have skirt around it and I'm not sure why you think they would. And your problem with Truth and Justice is what exactly? A black Superman is very much what America can and should be. If we can have a black Captain America ( and we have) we can have a black Superman.

Do you understand the meaning of these words you're typing?

Don't mistake me for anything approaching an SJW, but Superman is an ideal. Sure, he's always been portrayed in a certain way, but for cryin' out loud, so have Jesus and Santa Claus. It's just an interpretation.

Saying that the concept of a dark-skinned Kryptonian growing up on a farm is a bad idea is a bad idea. Assuming that the dark-skinned Kryptonian growing up on a farm must surely be raised by white people is ... weird.

I don't know what it's like in your corner of the world, but where I live it's not all black and white. :techman:

I absolutely think they'd skirt around the issue though, you're not gonna turn a symbol of American culture into a black guy subservient to the institutions who are racist in a WB DC movie. I think it's a bad idea all round, not least cause I don't think he looks the part anyway.

Meh, they dropped "The American Way" from most incarnations of the character a while ago because they didn't want to get into the political ramifications. So it's no big deal.

Why do you assume the character would be a black guy subservient to the institutions who are racist? Superman is a symbol the American ideal not American "culture"
And did I read that last part right???

I guess I did :wtf:

Didn't they ad it back when everyone was looking for Commies under the bed?

I think you can have Superman be black but you do have issues with doing it through Clark Kent because Reeves basically defined that role to point where you can't stray to for from it as you can see in how people disliked Man of Steel. I also know if they tried that kind of naive optinism the internet would be consumed with diatribes about how he isn't "black enough" for people and if try realism it is not Superman they prefer. This alternate universe is best option because it free's from any controversial haggling while alse getting to explore a new take on the character and one that hasn't already been define by other actors. Jordan would be the one who defines this template. Jason

I think it's hilarious that in this "woke" society, some people have a problem with the SUGGESTION that Superman be played onscreen by a black man.

It's hilarious, but disturbingly sad.

What the hell difference does it make what color, orientation, pronoun, blahblahblah a person is?

Can they do the job?

Yes or no.

Answer the question. Throw all the other bullshit aside and decide what matters.

I'll be over there by the bar.

Speaking as an out and proud SJW (Just like Clark Kent, Peter Parker, Steve Rogers and just about every other super hero character*), I agree with everything you said.

*I never understood how people who read super-hero comics can complain about "SJW's". They are pretty much ALL "social justice warriors", including the darker ones like Wolverine, Batman and the Punisher. What do these people get out of these stories?

I don't see any major complaining. Though I suspect some of the usual suspects will eventually show up and turn it to shit. Jason
