Episode IX Speculation and Discussion

And good is in the eye of the beholder.

For instance, I think that ROTS is not good.

I think that TLJ is good.

I think that Episode IX will be amazing. I truly am excited to see all of this come together, including Palpatine, who annoyed me to no end in the PT. That's my excitement.

Exactly - I think ROTS is one of the best films in the franchise behind ANH & ESB, and think TLJ is the worst of the lot.

I am really looking forward to TROS though, I've been very impressed with the trailers so far, and as much as I suspect that Palpatine has been chucked in there to please fans without any planning, I'm looking forward to seeing him again, and I like some of the theories that have been bandied about in this thread recently too.

Let's hope rose tico is given decent development and lines and not used as a soap box for the director of given shitty cliche dialog.

The poor actress got he'll because of Rians cock up with her character.

Yeah, there are some movies that they are still working on finishing up literally days before the premiere, and I think some will even have a few final polishes added between the premiere and the wide release.
IGN has quotes from a new interview JJ Abrams did with Rolling Stone where he explains why the The Force Awakens Leia footage that they used for The Rise of Skywalker was cut. Apparently there was originally a bigger subplot with Leia that lead up the destruction of Hosnian Prime, but they decided it was "working against the emtional core of The Force Awakens" and decided to cut it.

Didn't they deliver the last reel to the theater of Star Trek: The Motion Picture as it was still wet for the premiere?
Didn't they add a few additional effects shots in The Empire Strikes Back after its premiere?

The Rise of Skywalker is a big movie. There's a lot of things it needs to do. I appreciate the fact that they're trying to get it right. After all, George Lucas once suggested "A movie is never completed, only abandoned."

At the red carpet premier of either one of the LOTR or Hobbit films they were waiting for the print to come in by air. This was after long haul sessions by the editors to finalize the film.

In this day and age of being able to tweak things constantly before premier, a locked print is rare before it finally hits the screen.

So since this is the speculation thread... given the quotes by JJ, the theory that Rey literally has no parents and was created by the force to bring balance seems a lot more likely. How do we feel about this?

Because In my opinion EP 7 and EP 8 are very dissapointing, so far the sequels are the worst of the saga movies

Just wondering though, are you not seeing it because you really don’t care or because you don’t want to contribute to making the movie a success?

Not judging either way. Just curious.

I’ve never liked the idea of the force having that kind of agency or foresight. Not a fan of this whole fated balance thing. Kinda cheapens the actual decisions each character makes.

I like Rey, and I like the fact that she’s a nobody who happens to have enormous strength of will and a strong affinity with the Force. To say she’s somehow created by the Force takes away some of her own agency, which would be a shame when determined self-reliance has been such a strong part of her character. I don’t want her to do whatever she does because she is chosen by Force or fate to do it.

Having said that, I’m way more on board with that then having her revealed as yet another Skywalker.

Rey has no agency as it is. She just does the right thing..because
Because that is what she believes in.

Just like Han, and Lando, and on and on and on...

Does it have to be agency, per se? I mean, if the Force is created by life and the Dark Side impacts that flow then the Force might just react to creating more life, and in this case, it might have been Rey.

"A vergence, you say?"

"Located around a person?"

In any case, I feel that diminishes Rey’s character. I just prefer a kind of passive Force that doesn’t ‘react’ one way or the other. But then that whole line of thinking was thrown out by the prequels.

Rey has no agency because she doesn't have anything for herself that she is interested in.. she is a cypher for the writers. She doesn't behave according considering her situation. her goals are mired in "the right thing" in the vaguest way, and by definition she doesn't ASK for anything (even Daisy Ridley when talking about Rey, admits she never asked for anything)

She really is not. Her goals are not "mired" in the right thing. She is a person balancing between surviving and doing the right thing. Hence the conflict regarding BB-8, arguing with someone she has known longer, yet knowing that she identifies more with the droid than with Unkar.

If she is a cypher for the writers then she is a terrible one, since I have no idea what she is cyphering. So, that seems rather nonsensical.

Regardless, no matter what, people will complain about her because that's what's been done since 2017. Any other character would have been given latitude. Not this one.

Rey also wants nothing because she never had anything. Some of the most humble, generous people I know are those who had nothing growing up.
Also a good point.
