Robocop To Be The Next Failed Reboot

Yeah, I can't see this doing well. First they did the 2014 reboot and it flopped, and now this year they couldn't build enough interest in either Terminator or Charlie's Angels for them to succeed, and they are both more popular than Robocop.

Didn't they already reboot this just a few years ago...?
And it failed then.

Ah but they're going to ignore everything but the original film. That'll get the kids in, a sequel to a film released years before they were born. It worked for Terminator after all.

Oh, wait...

Sounds more like they're pulling a "Superman Returns" and making a direct sequel. As it happens, I really liked SR- much more than Man of Steel. So, If they can get Peter Weller, and use the Basil Poledouris score liberally, I wish them luck.

Wow, even the article doesn't know what Robocop is about.

Well. while I doubt it, it could possibly be good. I think a big factor about all of these movies is not only, 'they're doing that again" but "they're doing a crappy job of it"

If it's a good movie, I'm all for it.

The first movie really had a well contained story that still screamed for more adventures, but 2 was a big let down and 3 was kind of just... idk.

Really, who didn't want to see more after that ending,

Eh, I don't think Charlie's Angels is more popular then Robocop (How many people that weren't alive in the 70s give a crap about the show, and how many people in general care about those Cameron Diaz movies? I'm betting not that many people).

That said, it is a bad time for reboots, and if they remade Robocop again, they have to good back to its roots (Hard R rating, etc) to have a chance, which I can't see them doing (PG-13 is still king when it comes to the rating that most studios want for their movies).

I saw Little Monsters in the theater (a one night event) -- the commercials made it seem like it would be a blast (especially with Lupita starring)...but was disappointed in its raunchiness, especially kids in the movie and "part" of it. My wife, who usually likes zombie movies & shows, really did NOT like it.

While Verhoeven did a lot of over the top satire with his sci-fi movies, i don't think Forsythe would be able to give that level of humor / clever satire.

Maybe they can re-name the concept?

I could see this working. Hopefully they keep Peter Weller. I would love to see Paul Verhoeven return, though. I think it'd be funny if, 32 years later, OCP is STILL trying to get construction underway on Delta City. I know they're supposedly ignoring 2 and 3, but I liked the concept of RoboCop 2 making fun of "bigger and badder" sequels in the movie's namesake. Maybe Old Murphy is still hobbling around Old Detroit, so OCP decides it's time to "reboot" the RoboCop brand and issue some vastly inferior product to compete with the original.

Most people miss Verhoeven's take entirely--as did all the sequels. Robocop 2 was a passable movie but didn't compare to the wit and mood of the original.

From what I've read, they have about as much chance convincing Peter Weller to reprise his role as they do with Dan O'Herlihy and Robert DoQui. I don't think he was all that into doing the second movie and the third was just a flat "no".

The thing with Robocop is that it was a creature of it's time. While a lot of it is still relevant today (arguably more so) you'd still have to change it to such an extent you'd be better off just telling an original story. Hell, the crap reboot from a few years back could quiet easily have been that as it bore next to no similarity to the original beyond some surface details.

I think we're at the point now where nostalgia remakes are not the safe bet they once were, and it's a smarter move to do something original unless it's a *really* good pitch.

Plus he's 72 years old. (73 by the time they start shooting, if they ever do.) So I don't think strapping him into a tin can would be the best idea...

Biting satire about the current world and a hard 'R' rating will be crucial to its success.

Is the original Robocop really all that important to the cultural landscape anymore? If you said “I’ll buy that for a dollar!” will many people know what you’re talking about?

This feels like such an IP grab. Especially making it a sequel to the original. “Look, it’s the Robocop ya love!” But how many people love that Robocop? I do, but... Nostalgia is getting old for me. This endless need to recycle and recreate the past as it was.

Remake was a better idea, but they blew it.
