MLB 2019: Mad Max Beyond Astrodome

I genuinely think the entire thinking behind the Ross hiring for Chicago is that Epstein is following the popular trend of the front office having more and more control over in-game decisions. Billy Beane has been doing it in Oakland for years, as has Brian Cashman in New York (reportedly a reason he sacked Girardi, because Girardi told him to fuck off), Brodie Van Wagenen was calling down to the dugout during Mets games to tell Callaway what to do with pitching changes this past season, and Friedman has been doing it with the Dodgers. Epstein has two huge blind spots: First, nepotism (as I explained in an earlier post). Second, he has a semi-pathological obsession with being able to say, "Look how fucking smart I am."
Ugh, fuck that shit. I hate owners backseat managing. If they're so fucking smart, step up, manage down in the trenches, and accept the bad with the good.

Yeah, yeah...I know...

Houston ties the series with Walgreens at 2-2. I was starting to get a bit worried.

Yeah,yeah...you know if they did that there would be no scapegoat after the bad ;)

In 2016, the Cubs were down 2-1, then 3-1 and then 3-2 going back to Cleveland. It can still go either way, plus the road teams seem to have the edge this series.

Go Expos!

Max Scherzer scratch from his game five start.

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/10/max-scherzer-scratched-from-game-5-start.html

At a pregame media session, Scherzer told reporters (including Mark Zuckerman of MASN) that he is also dealing with nerve irritation in his neck. The ace added that he underwent a cortisone shot that will take approximately 48 hours to kick in, seemingly putting to rest any hope he could return in Tuesday’s Game 6. He remains on the Nationals’ World Series roster, but those in attendance at this evening’s media session (including Todd Dybas of NBC Sports) seemed less than optimistic about his chances of returning by Wednesday’s potential Game 7.

Looks like we're doing a road-team winner World Series.

All good if that holds for the next two games...

The road warrior World Series continues!

The umps are damn lucky that their bullshit call against Turner didn't effect the final outcome of this game.

The umps are lucky they have jobs and their contract doesn't allow MLB to suspend or take them out of the "rotation". MLB better get that control the next time around. These guys suck to the last man.

MLB is the sole arbiter of who works postseason games (it's based upon cumulative scoring from the regular season). The issue with the MLBUA is that Cowboy Joe is in charge of it.

That being said, the MLBUA's CBA expires after tonight's game--okay, well, technically it runs through December 31, but functionally it's up after the World Series--which is why you're seeing so many planted stories at ESPN and other outlets (CNN / Bleacher Report, especially) about robo-umps, as MLB is looking to exert some leverage over the union. This is gearing up to be a testy round of bargaining.

Turner was out of the basepath, wasn't he?

Turner was called out for runner's interference (swiping at Gurriel's glove), not for leaving the basepath.

So like the NFL, MLB has some small measure of control, but seemingly not enough to make a difference in the quality of umps work.

I don't think robo-umps would be the worst change to the game to come along. Add a camera directly over home plate to help with the strike zone as well as enable swing/no swing calls to be made accurately.

Right now, I'm not even sure what the hell constitutes a swing. I always had the impression the bat had to cross the foul line. But if it's crossing the front of home plate I don't get how a corner ump can make that call. Then have that video up on the big screen so the call can be made by the home plate umpire.

Former Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton has been charged with felony injury to a child 14 or younger, namely one of his daughters.
The girl told authorities that Hamilton became upset about something she said and threw a full water bottle at her, hitting her in the chest, while cursing and yelling. He then pulled a chair out from under her feet and tossed it at her before yanking her to the ground, the affidavit says.

Hamilton then picked up the girl, threw her over his shoulder and carried her to her bedroom as she yelled that she was sorry, the document says. She said he threw her onto her bed, used one hand to pin down her head and then started hitting her legs with his other hand.

He later picked her up by her sweatshirt, causing it to rip, she said, and hit her on her back.

According to the affidavit, after he stopped hitting the girl, he said: “I hope you go in front of the [expletive] Judge and tell him what a terrible dad I am so I don’t have to see you anymore.”

Sounds like a really swell guy.
