Episode IX Speculation and Discussion

We do.

Spoiler leaks, the trailers, and comments from JJ and others pretty much cement his return in physical form.
Leaks aren't always true, we don't actually see him his full body in the trailers, and I don't remember JJ specifically saying he physically survived.
Promotional stuff also can't always be trusted, so Palpatine appearing on the Alamo Drafthouse glass isn't 100% confirmation he physically survived either, all it means we might see his face at some point.
Nothing we've seen or heard rules out him being some kind of spirit or possessing someone, or something else.

^ JJ and others have confirmed that Ian was on-set and in-costume; if Palparine were not back in physical form, that wouldn't have been the case.

So, yes, it's definitive that Palps is back in physical form; we just don't know the "how" or "why".

Boy, a flashback or a hologram wouldn’t allow for either of those things, would it?

The ones from Bad Robot seem to be usually on point (like we saw with TFA). It seems like JJ's production company doesn't believe in information security and everything leaks out likes a sieve there. Not to mention the trailers (and the photos Disney had taken down for copyright infringement) have corroborated the leaks.

Context is king. Leaks may have gotten out but knowing exactly what they mean is something entirely different. At this point, LFL and Bad Robot know about the leaks. I’m just saying it’s possible they are using this to punk the spoiler-lovin’ fanboys.

There are numerous things in the full TRoS theatrical trailer that conform one-to-one with Spoiler leaks.

Some of the things that have been leaked may now be inaccurate due to reshoots or other factors, but there is definite truth to other elements of what's been leaked as confirmed by trailers and whatnot.

If Ian's involvement in TRoS were merely for flashbacks or a hologram, there would have been no need for him to actually come to the TRoS set because his part in the film for either of those contexts could have been filmed 'off-site'; they would also not have required him to interact with or share scenes with other members of the cast, and we have had confirmation from Daisy Ridley that she shared scenes with him.

There are plenty of situations I can come up with where we he would have been on set and yet he still might not be there physically.
He's a ghost or something where they will add some kind of effect in post, or it's a vision, or a flashback, or he's really in someone else's body but they are showing McDiarmid, or he's in a clone body like in the Legends stories.

You know what I ultimately think? Either Palps died on the Death Star II or he was never really there in the first place.

If he was there, he’s a clone or an impostor in TRoS. If he wasn’t, he was a clone or an double in ROTJ.

It makes far more sense for it to be the later.

^ There's a third option: He was physically present on the second Death Star, but survived its destruction and only allowed the galaxy at large to believe that he was dead.

That is an option, yes. But, let’s be honest... we saw him fall down a really big pit. Was the big wave of energy the shockwave of him hitting a giant mattress?

@Saul Go watch Star Wars Rebels and you'll learn what the World Between Worlds is.

And so did Maul.

If Maul could survive both bisection and a fall, Palpatine surviving both a fall down the DSII's reactor shaft and the station's destruction is entirely plausible.

Okay, yes, as much as I hate the fact that Maul survived his fight with Kenobi, I can’t deny the fact he survived. (I think it was one of the worst decisions in TCW. Then again I always thought Maul was a little overrated.)

It just seems unlikely for the same thing to happen twice in storytelling. I would hope that they’d come up with another reason other than Sheev catching an air vent and escaping that way.

Meh. I appreciate echoes in the films. This is something different. I think it would show cunning for Palps to be able to have planned for his potential death on the Death Star. Catching an air grate is cheap.
agreed.
overall.. we might not agree on a whole lot.. but i guess most of the arguments i've been making on these threads is just pointing out stuff that I personally think are "cheap" and therefore unearned. and it's cool that on some of that we don't agree.. but I just want to clear the air and let you know that I care about SW and want the storytelling to be good.. and if it feels cheap to me than that's why I'll bring it up
