and I say that as a straight white male, happy to know that any daughters I might have will be able to see someone who looks like them wielding a lightsaber.
Same here. Luke will always be my go to Star Wars guy (yes, even after TLJ) but Rey is what I want for my daughters.

ETA:
I stumbled upon an article discussing this topic. Obviously this will not convince anyone of one side or the other. I utilize more to challenge the preconception that somehow thinking Rey is not a Mary Sue is a minority position that needs to be eliminated.

Here is a quote and the link is below:
Well, the answer is simple: She's not a Mary Sue. That's just a really lame way to complain about a character that some people really dislike for reasons I simply cannot fathom. Luke was every bit as OP is in the context of the original trilogy. In some ways, he's even more Mary Sue-ish than Rey, though The Last Jedi remedies that in beautiful fashion by giving Luke his own baggage and regrets. But Luke, like Anakin before him, was presented as the Chosen One who will bring Balance to the Force. The entire first six movies were built around creating this myth around Luke and his father. Rey, on the other hand, is just Rey. She's not a Chosen One, she's not the daughter of some other famous character. She's nobody.

Maybe she is literally a Mary Sue. She doesn't know past. Born Mary Sue but parents didn't leave a note. The custom service guy who named Solo, now retired finds a baby in a basket on his front porch and says, How Cute! Aren't you a ray of sunshine! I am going to call you Ray that then got altered to Rey. Jason
Marey Sue. Now it all makes sense!

I'm one of those slightly younger people. ROTS was the first SW movie I saw in theaters. My younger sister definitely feels that way about the prequels, but for me, the sequels are my trilogy. I don't really understand why, but they just speak to me more - and I say that as a straight white male, happy to know that any daughters I might have will be able to see someone who looks like them wielding a lightsaber.
I adore Rey, her finally taking the lightsaber in TFA is my favorite scene in the franchise. I’m so happy that girls have her as a role model now.

I think Rey is a mary sue.. but hey I'm not convince anyone here. Fine.

On a separate note, she is a bland uninteresting character with no personality. Opinion, of course.

re-read my phrasing. I said I thought she was a mary sue.. i might not be able to convince anyone here and that is fine.

Then I wrote "on a separate note".. hope you noticed
Yes, I read it. And I was making an observation that finding a character boring doesn't automatically make them a Mary Sue.

You can keep thinking she is a Mary Sue all day long. That's fine. I just think Mary Sue has become a catch all term for a character people don't like. And I think finding a character boring is one way that can be expressed.

Yes, I noticed. And added my own comments.

I couldn't care less whether or not she fits the Mary Sue archetype. But I certainly concur that she is bland and uninteresting. To be fair, I feel the same way about Kylo as well.

My requirements for this movie are very superficial; Palpatine wreaks havoc and one hell of a space battle.

So you don’t know what a Mary Sue even is? You’re just calling her that because others do as well, but it’s a complete misunderstanding of the term. Maybe you shouldn’t base your opinion on what others thought and were wrong about.
