The weekly WATCHMEN episode sum-up

The cars are probably some sort of hybrid or the truck was an illegal modification. The written material mentions a lot of technology being banned due to fears of it bringing on another alien attack. The 7th Kalvary was also collecting watch batteries for some reason before they were raided. Li-ion watch batteries may be banned as well due to those fears.

That reminded me of the guy who got caught a few years ago trying to collect old smoke detectors to get enough Americium to make a dirty bomb.

Lithium is used to placate people in small doses...I am a bit grey on if these batteries contained ‘synthetic lithium’ or were the old ones the synthetic replaced. (Synthetic lithium would essentially be small bits of Doc Manhattan if it’s Manhattan tech)

The written material refers to banning tech, but then it being reintroduced prior to the series start, a bit at a time (hence no wireless tech as became common in our world) so the jury is still out on precisely what they are reintroducing (it’s mostly a device that keeps the series looking eighties enough to sit with its earlier work, and also gives it the nostalgia we get from stranger things. Hence the quite good soundtrack too.)

My wife thought they were collecting the watches for shrapnel. Symbolic shrapnel. I could get behind that.

But yeah...it also reminds me of the Boy Scout scraping clocks to build a nuclear reactor. Which makes me wonder if they have one of Veidts old Manhattan reactors laying around. I suspect they are trying to make a new Manhattan.

It's way the hell easier to write a plot without cell phones.

Totally. I had a storm knock out the electricity in the book I am writing so the two leads can’t charge them. Oh and they needed new ones because of moving country. I had to keep referencing the things and why they aren’t using them...because it just ruins the plot. Thankfully it’s a bit gothic novel cum literary romance, and I have some stuff to do with photos as memories in there, so I could use it in other ways integral to the plot, but fundamentally I was just finding ways to not let the characters have access to stuff we take for granted with phones.

I think this series is gonna be running with a lot of misdirection too...right now I have a safe bet that the mentioned ‘racism’ is going to be directed not at African Americans, despite the opening, but at Asian Americans, because of the alt-history and symbolism being used (tiny bit of yolk ruins the white....Sister Night is Vietnamese...the communist flag styled Bakery signs...) and that it may be allegorically done.

I will definitely say it’s the cleverest pilot of anything I have seen in a long time, and has more thought piled into its visuals than usual. I am very curious where it’s going though, and fully imagine there will be rage in the twitter sphere before all is done if it gets a big following.
But...well, that’s not much of a surprise given the source. Loads of people just don’t get it to this day. Probably why all the grim dark shit in capes and tights media seem to be doomed to keep repeating it. (And média in general lol.) Even here there’s loads of us that think we get it, only to argue with others who have their own ‘it’ which is probably as valid.
(Rorsach! Hero! Fascist! It’s gonna run and run...)
I don’t think much of Alan Moore tbh, but he did a good job on Watchmen.
Same is true of Zack Snyder to be fair.

So I'm reading WildCATS from the 90s by Alan Moore, and it's strikingly familiar. Does this guy only have one idea, or was he so stoned that he forgot that he had already written Watchmen?

By the 90s he has already begun losing his mind, leading us to modern Alan writing complete garbage.

There are certain elements which feel like a reach. Like, police having to get special permission to access their firearms. There is no world liberal enough for that to believably happen.
You know that in the U.K. almost all Police aren't allowed to carry firearms ?

And that the specialised firearms teams that do have to be granted permission from senior officers to use them in most situations ?

He had lots of ideas. (Many DC are still using today.) You should check out Tom Strong, the America's Best Comics stuff. Promethea is a fucking trip.

The streets also aren’t swarming with guns there.

Sure, if there is no risk of somebody pulled over shooting the officer in the face, it’s less important that it not take 20 seconds between perception of threat and access to firearms.

It was okay but I'm a bit disappointed it's about racial relations. That seems like such a tired trope in TV these days.

Yes.
But...
The X-Men Wildcats crossover is fun.

So far, it’s not about racial relations, except the actual history of the U.S...

Loved Tom Strong.

Promethea was too Neil Gaimeny.

I can see that. Neil Gaiman by way of Grant Morrison.

Now there’s a man who had a few ideas and then sadly started coasting on them. Good ideas at first but...
When the magic wore off for me, as a reader, I sat back and counted how many full books he had actually written, and how many times across his stuff he fell into iteration.
But like Moore with Watchmen, he had made his mark before believing in his legend; and both did sterling work with Doctor Who.
