Random Thoughts...or...What's on Your Mind?

If your patience is so...limited, may I respectfully suggest...

I am certain that Canadian groceries have something similar.

May I respectfully suggest that you actually pay attention to what I post? I don't drive, so "order ahead and pick it up later" isn't an option for me.

I get most of my groceries delivered. I go to Walmart if I need something in a hurry or if it's significantly cheaper than my regular store. There's a minimum purchase required for Walmart orders in Canada, and I'm not going to go through the hassle of picking out $50 worth of stuff if all I need is a jar of peanut butter and a tub of honey.

Also, if you need to see the consequences of sane people not voting, just LOOK TO YOUR SOUTH.

I think there’s a reasonable limit for how long to wait for someone just loitering in the middle of the aisle. You give them a reasonable amount of time to notice somebody is trying to get through. If they’re picking something from the shelf, you wait a bit longer. Eventually, you need to get their attention, starting politely.

Unfortunately, Canada still has many people who are fixated on how "evil" Pierre Trudeau was, and tend to blame Justin for things that happened when he was still a child, or not even born.

I don't mind waiting for someone who is actually shopping, ie. picking something off a shelf or at least obviously checking out what's on the shelf. But the people I'm talking about weren't shopping. They were just standing there, talking (and talking, and talking, and talking). If they wanted to stand around and talk, there are lots of other places in that store where they could have done this and not been in anyone's way.

Normally I do start out with a polite "Excuse me, please." That's how most people do things here, and that's the point where most people move aside. I am willing to allow that some people might not have heard me the first time, as my speaking voice is usually not loud. But I am capable of increasing the decibels if it's obvious that the person knows I'm there and trying to get past and won't move their anatomy to let me.

Contrary to what I've heard about in the USA, in France sick days are not limited or usable at your leisure. You can take as many as you want as long as you get a doctor to sign on it. If they suspect that you're faking it though, your employers may pay professionals (they are certified doctors though, so it's rather expensive) to check on you to see if you respect the terms of your prescription. For instance, if someone is found doing some gardening when he's supposed to be resting he could be fired with prejudice. However, that situation is rather rare and usually the result of a conflict between the employer and the employee. The most comfortable kind of sick leave is depression. There's practically nothing that the employer can do about it.

Depression is anything but comfortable.

Depression is anything but comfortable.

To be fair, I believe that was a mis-translation of the term, comfortable.

I had a close friend, from the days we went to kindergärten, who killed himself many years ago and I was shocked and devastated that he did not reach out to me or others in our circle. It pains me to this day and I miss his laughter. I still "visit" him occasionally.

I am talking about the people who're faking it. There's no way for an employer to trap someone "not being depressed", as they can do to people who are supposed to be bedridden for example and are found wandering about in their property or something.

which is of course no offense at all as "wandering about" close to the bed in question is excercise in fresh air which supossedly furthers a speedy recovery

I thought people with depression issues were recommended to get out and stay more engaged. At least, the depression would have to be incredibly severe not to be able to do that.

And you’d think, people with that level depression would be able to get out of their beds even less than physically sick people.

According to statistics, there is a significant amount of people in my country that are faking an illness in order to avoid work. What I meant is that if you are one of these people it is easier to fake depression than other diseases, like back injuries for example. Similar studies show that some doctors are quick to deliver sick days to people at their request, even when it's not warranted. I didn't imagine this problem. It's plagued my country for decades and still does.

I understand and that makes total sense. Thank you for explaining, but I should have been able to infer based on the subject.

I mean, I think it’d be hard to fake severe enough depression to keep you from going to work just enjoying yourself at home.

People who have depression but can cover it up so you can’t see it generally still go to work.

Unless your country prescribes isolation and bed rest for more mild to moderate depression.

Not all depression is chronic. I can see situations where someone might be able to fake it enough to take a few days off.

I went to the local library yesterday to return 3 books. The parking lot was full so I had to park along the street. I parked behind a mail truck and pulled out my phone to turn off the sound before going into the building. The mail carrier walked past me and gave me a dirty look. I wondered what ticked her off and got out of the car to go in the library. She turned around and yelled something at me. Still wondering what got her knickers in a twist, I went on into the library. It dawned on me while I moved along the stacks, that she probably thought I was taking a picture of her truck with my phone. I wasn't, but I wonder why that would make her mad, anyway. But government workers sometimes have a bad reputation so I don't blame her for being suspicious.

I've never been depressed. I've known sadness and even extreme sadness but it never had lingering effects on my way of being. I always bounce back. I hope it will stay that way and since I am almost 59, chances are that it will.
