What grade would you give the Marvel Cinematic Universe? (Ever-Changing Question)

Good on him. As much I loved his performance as Tony, it's simply not Oscar worthy. His performance was largely built upon the decade-long work in a multitude of previous films and, on its own, it doesn't hold much weight. If Michael B. Jordan didn't get a nomination for Black Panther, I can't see Downey Jr. getting one for Endgame.
 
Honestly, I liked his performance a lot overall, but even if it had been an oscar worthy performance, his delivery of that final 'I am Iron Man' was so out of step with the scene around it that it still would have totally ruined it for me.
 
Okay, I had no clue that Hayley Lovitt played multiple Marvel roles: Sage in The Gifted tv series plus Janet Van Dyne in both Ant-Man and Ant-Man and the Wasp.

Well, "played" is stretching the point in the latter case -- she was the performance double that the de-aged Michelle Pfeiffer was digitally superimposed over.

I mean, he was never going to even be nominated, but I rarely find the people who win that award to be particularly impressive actors anyway, so he'd be a step up. But, unfortunately, an actor usually has to be in a shitty oscar bait film to have any chance of winning best actor, being in an actually good film probably disqualifies them (unless they do both a good film and an oscar bait film in the same year, I suppose).

I love all three of Nolan's Batman movies, but Bale's Batman voice is absolutely ridiculous. I understand wanting to do a different voice for Bruce and Batman, but Bale definitely could have toned it down a lot.
 
Every time Bale opened his mouth as Batman he sounded EXACTLY like Sargent Slaughter.

What do you consider to be a typical Oscar-bait film and why do you think that or those kinds are usually bad?

A film that is mostly just enjoyed by critics, usually is a really dramatic, serious, film and is usually considered to be good by the types of people who don't consider comic book films to be "real" films. Frequently, but not always, its a film that general audiences don't really give a shit about even though film snobs love it (there are literally too many to list). Its also sometimes a film that is problematic but the ancient oscar voters like it even if it would never win if a more...varied group voted for the oscars (Green Book being a great example of "Only won because the oscars voters are 90% the same demographic", from what I understand) .

Now, sometimes an actually good film gets so popular even the oscars have to reward it (Return of the Ring being the biggest example of the Oscars bowing to the general audience), and sometimes a film that ends up being hated soon afterwards gets the award (although I've never seen it, most people that pay more attention seem to consider Crash to be a film that didn't deserve the award, but still got it). There is also the "legacy award", although this is more for Best Actor. Its when an actor gets the award as kind of a make good/lifetime achievement thing, even if the specific role they're getting it for maybe didn't totally deserve it.

As for what I'd consider "oscar bait" films specifically, just at a brief glance at who has won recently, I'd say that

Slumdog Millionaire
Spotlight
Birdman
The King's Speech
Green Book

are all pretty much perfect examples of "Oscar Bait" films.

Looks like according to Kirk, deconstructions and bio-pics shouldn't exist. Nor should foreign films or true stories. Nothing that doesn't have a joke or explosion at least once every 10 minutes should exist.
 
Fellowship was awful if you didn't already know the mythology. I went into it knowing NOTHING (not even the genre) and was completely confused, particularly by the pacing. One minute these people are running from some farmer and next they are inseparable friends on a quest to save the world. It was a 3 hour movie that felt 2 hours too short for telling the tale it told.

TDKR is probably the most thematically interesting of the Nolan movies. It's just that the plot becomes secondary to the themes, and people hate that.

That's a pretty good point really. It didn't bother me that much really, because I just really enjoyed the performances in the movie, and the themes. But yeah, plot wise..... It could be better.

Yeah, good job putting words in my mouth :vulcan: All of those movies have the right to exist, and unlike Scorsese I don't pretend that those movies aren't "cinema". I'm just saying that there are certain kinds of films that tend to get Academy awards, and a lot of the time its not because they're "better" films, they're just ones that hit certain buttons for oscar voters, who historically have been a fairly homogeneous group.

Also, I can't think of the last movie I watched that had an explosion every 10 minutes (not even Michael bay movies average that), and the joke thing is so tired a complaint that I just have to roll my eyes at it. God forbid everything not be a boring, overly serious 5 hour deconstruction of something. Also, most (if not all) Marvel movies have a lot of emotion and character to them, even if haters like to pretend that they're just mindless, jokey movies.
