So, I've watched it twice now and I'm still a bit confused about whether Number One is all human or half something else (Alien) ???

I know in one of the novels it's said she is Illyrian.
Does that still hold true?

The bit of conversation just before she bursts into Modern Major General seems to almost indicate she is.


(of course I've been waaaay off in many of my past interpretations, so there is that)

My only quibble/nitpick is Pike’s hair. Supposedly this was a few years before the Cage in which Pike didn’t have any (apparent) gray hair. I guess he started dyeing it at some point and eventually quit doing so.

Maybe he was using a future version of Grecian Formula for awhile and then stopped after the pep-talk with Dr. Boyce?

Nope. Spock was assigned to the Enterprise in 2254. so right before the events of the cage and even then Pike was greying.

Thank you. I did hear correctly but it was one of those barely kind of things. Like I said, this short was pretty charming, and probably my favorite one of the 5 so far.

She actually even says it in a roundabout way during the episode.

Her name of "Una" was mentioned in the finale of Season Two.

No it wasn't. She gave her name as 'Number One' in those scenes.

Una was said by Pike earlier in the episode during the battle.

Interesting short. I did not expect a musical number Spock wearing down Number One was not unexpected.
Where in the Enterprise is room for those turboshafts and empty spaces?

"Una" no doubt has its roots to the number "one", "uno", etc.

The Illyrian designation came from DC Fontana's "Vulcan's Glory". DC used some of the backstory Majel Barrett devised for herself when preparing to take on the role of Number One in the 60s. IIRC, Majel imagined her coming from an Earth colony world, which provides plenty of scope for why Number One is so enigmatic.

That was pretty good. It had warmth and was appropriately "cute." I smiled through almost the whole thing.

It's also pretty clear that the producers are totally trolling fans with the ridiculous views of the turboshaft network at this point. Which, of course, I love.

Man, they would really CLEAN UP with a Pike series. The charm and chemistry of these actors and characters...absolute gold.
