New 40th anniversary edition of ST:TMP novelisation?

Found out yesterday that this new Gallery Books trade paperback (October 2019) finally corrects the persistent typo that made in into previous editions.

In the 1979 US MMPB, the limited-edition slipcase hardcover, UK and Australasian MMPBs, and perhaps the Science Fiction Book Club's hardcover, too, all misspelt Vice Admiral Lori Ciana as "Ciani" in her first mention. (Ah, just checked, and the 1980 French translation edition, in MMPB, got it correct.)

People have reported the new edition as arriving in stores already.

I have the 1980s reprint of the Motion picture movie novelization. I also have a used book I bought about when they made this movie.And how difficult it was getting it made back in 1979.

My brain-melting concern is whether or not the new edition will include the paragraph(s) that previously only appeared in the UK/AUS editions. Which I only learned about thanks to Therin.

Oh, and apparently IDW will be republishing the Marvel Comics Super Special magazine containing the complete adaptation of TMP.
Comixology says that's coming at the end of December.

(I used to have a copy of that magazine in Spanish, which I magnanimously gifted to a friend almost 40 years ago. Wish I could find a replacement!)

I've been planning a re-read of this one for a while, with the 40th anniversary looming and all. Going to see the special screening helped stoke that fire, and now I'm waiting for the audio version to drop.

I am assuming it won't. It seems to be an addition only for the 1979 version used by the UK and Australasian publishers. I am looking forward to reading along with my Futura MMPB to the unabridged Robert Petkoff audio, to catch any other variations. Will keep you posted!

I saw the new reprint in the bookstore today, which is great. I didn't expect them to have the audiobook, but I've placed an order for it. I, too am looking forward to hearing Robert Petkoff, who I think is a great fit as a narrator for ST books. I liked his performance as the younger Captain Kirk in The Captain's Oath, will be interesting to hear his performance of Kirk in the throws of starship-captain-addict withdrawal, unlikable at times and a danger to himself and others.

It's a footnote in Chapter Two, the Kolinahr sequence.

I just meant that's where it was in the original. I can't confirm it's in the new edition, though I see no reason to exclude it. If anything, Footnote Kirk's casual acceptance of "love in all its forms" is far less controversial today than it would've been in 1979.

I still have my First Edition Paperback of this book.
(though it's a little worn around the edges, I think I've it about 20 times through the years)

I also still have the limited edition hardcover that came from the old Science Fiction Book Club.

The old review thread, if there is one, would have passed its "no new responses" Use-By date. And none of us have reviewed an unabridged audio version.

As far as I can tell, all the footnotes are there, which is great. The typo of Lori Ciana's name in her first appearance has been corrected. I checked for one of the small additions that @Therin of Andor has mentioned are in the UK/Australian version (extra text during the transporter accident sequence), the extra text from the UK/Australian versions are not added in. This is a small detail that doesn't bother me too much. The line about the cloud diameter or the intruder's diameter has been left as 82 AUs, not changed or corrected to 2 AUs. There are no extras before or after the novelization, no new foreword or afterword (although an additional forward would be confusing, since the two prefaces are part of the narrative. Feels like a minor missed opportunity to not have even a modest bonus feature before or after the story starts.

IIRC, @trampledamage usually allows us a little more leeway in reviving review threads for valid reasons, but in any case, I searched, and couldn't find an old one anyway.

I guess if nothing else, by setting up a review thread, it's one more legacy novel that makes its way into the review aggregator site. So, enjoy!

Which it did! New IDW ads, replacing the vintage ads for Marvel products, but the text pieces and pics from the original are all there.
