Battlestar Galactica getting rebooted (again) for NBS's streaming service

I hate the idea of explaining God in BSG. The show really wasn’t about that, it was just an element that tied together their journey to a new home and influenced several characters.

 

The odd thing is this whole God business really was more of a NuBSG construct. TOS wasn’t even about God at all, but an ancient battle at the celestial level between the Seraphs (Beings of Light) and the fallen demon Count Iblis, using the Colonials and Cylons as their pawns, with Baltar stuck in between. Personally, I wish they would go back to that, but I doubt they will.

 

But it's a perfect nerdy and slightly blasphemous discussion which is just perfect for a Star Trek message board.

 

The Beings of light were the Original Cylons, count Ibliis was an asshole original Cylon that couldn't get along with the rest, and the current Cylons were abanoned servants making the best of it on their own.

 

Upset seems a strong word for it.

I've never fully accepted the metaphysical implications of BSG's final season (with strong emphasis on the fact that this did only occur in the final season), because I don't believe Ron Moore himself can sell me on them. I suspect he's too honest and humble a showrunner to falsely or unreliably claim they were always his intention with the series. And there is simply too much evidence of changed, abandoned or unrealized premises -in general- throughout BSG's entire run, culminating in the final TV movie that highlighted many of them in a retroactive attempt to try to patch them up.

It seems more likely Moore just never figured how else to explain Head Six, nor what he had meant to accomplish by sacrificing and resurrecting Starbuck.

Speaking as someone who is a believer, I don't have an issue with the direction of this discussion. I'm open minded enough to the possibility that God is just a being so much more advanced that its beyond our ability to understand. The question then becomes, if God is such a being, far beyond our ability to understand, at what point does that make a difference to us humans between a god and not a god. Isn't that basically the definition of God - a being beyond our understanding? Perhaps if our understanding evolved enough to understand that being it would cease being a god for us, but in the meantime there's no practicable difference to my mind.

 

The difference is the requirement of worship and the claim of having a personal relationship where God is highly concerned about helping you to find your car keys if you pray hard enough.

 

Not quite. The Beings of Light (if you’re referring to TOS lore) were supposed to be the original ascended Lords of Kobol, from which the Colonial Humans descended.

Iblis was cast out from them, and twisted up into a kind of demonic entity, or possibly the last member of another ascended species entirely that were enemies of the Seraphs - nobody really knows. He was the one who created the first Imperious Leader with three brains, the third of which was said to have been built by Iblis himself, containing a part of his essence to control the Cylons through the Leader (hence the intentional use of Patrick Macnee’s voice throughout the show and Baltar recognizing him as such on the Prison Barge). The original reptilian Cylons embraced the cybernetic technology that Iblis provided until it took them over almost completely.

In the original concept, there were still biological Cylon bits inside the robots containing single brains (and 2 brains in gold-plated Commanders like Vulpa and IL-series Cylons like Lucifer and Spectre), making them technically cyborgs, but TV “sensibilities” at the time weren’t compatible with our Colonial heroes blowing away other living beings every week, so they changed the nature of the Cylons to be purely mechanical robots who deposed their original reptilian masters after Iblis’ influence fully took over.

Honestly, they kind of look like giant humanoid snapping turtles to me.

 

I would've liked a BSG that had ongoing elements from one incarnation to the next. An active if loose continuity that allowed the BSG concept to grow. Instead it seems it's just going to be recycled over and over. We could discuss how themes in ST and SW are also reused but those 2 big sci-fi shows grow and build off each other. That is what I wish BSG would also be.

 

They covered their butts when they came up with "this has all happened before, and will happen again". It's kept the reboot vs continuation debate going for 15 years.

 

Supernatural just means things beyond the current laws of nature as we understand them right? Obviously our own understanding must be imperfect at this point, given science can only disprove things, not prove them. It may well be that (just as a wild-ass example) we find some proof of the existence of souls eventually. Thus souls would cease to be a supernatural thing, and instead be a part of nature, understandable through physical laws.

On another tact, let's say that we're actually in "the Matrix." Earth is actually being run as a simulation in an advanced computer. The operator of said program has ultimate power over the simulation, and can reward us after death with a virtual afterlife. Even if - outside the simulation - said person is just a dude, within the simulation is there any doubt he is God?

 

The Architect was my favorite part of the second movie. So much stuff going on there.

BSG1978 was HEAVILY steeped in Mormon religious allegory. Larson's original pitch for the series was "Adams Ark".

 

Sure, but aside from those who are really into the show, who's going to know that? The rank-and-flle audience they're looking to tap into isn't likely to have that knowledge. I sure didn't when I first started watching it back in 1978.

For that matter, how many people know that John Smith, Brigham Young and much of their Salt Lake crew were Freemasons and based the precepts of LDS on Masonic principles? Even less, I wager. An initiation scene in "Big Love" has ritualistic parts taken out of the Entered Apprentice, Fellowcraft and Master Mason Degrees. Hell, the initiates even wore Masonic aprons, FFS!

Taking it to its logical conclusion, TOS BSG could even be considered steeped in Masonic philosophical symbolism by the transitive property. Doesn't really matter at the end of the day, so long as it has an interesting story and well written characters driving it.

 

Only because Noah's Ark was already a TV Show.



I tracked Iblis as a Cylon, rather than a helpful traveling salesman, becuase of the interaction with Baltar.
