Random Thoughts...or...What's on Your Mind?

^one of the eternal mysteries of language. I've always been wondering why there are hives of bees but swarms of mosquitos, flocks of birds but paddlings of ducks, packs of wolves but bands of coyotes, herds of deer but a mob of kangaroohs? Couldn't there simply be groups of insects/birds/fish/mammals?
And if fish in general come in schools, why don't large fish form a university or at least a college? And wouldn't a bed of clams be rather uncomfortable?

Because language is more fun when we can say “Murder of crows” and “Unkindness of ravens”.

“Unkindness of ravens”.

Nevermore, along with picking out eye-balls ;), when left hanging.

Edgar Allan Poe knew what he was doing when he used the raven instead of some other bird to croak out “nevermore” in his famous poem. The raven has long been associated with death and dark omens, but the real bird is somewhat of a mystery. Unlike its smaller cousin the crow, not a lot has been written about this remarkable bird. Here are 10 fascinating facts about ravens.

1. Ravens are one of the smartest animals.

This morning, while watching Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, I was struck with the same tought I've often had since the new crop of Apes movies started: that anything sounds cooler if you put it on the Planet of the Apes:

Public Library...of THE PLANET OF THE APES!

University...of THE PLANET OF THE APES!

Krispy Kreme...of THE PLANET OF THE APES!

Office Manager...of THE PLANET OF THE APES!

Bed and Breakfast...of THE PLANET OF THE APES!

Obviously, there are limits to how well it works...but I haven't figured them out yet.

^I think it's not so much a problem of adjustment but of blood flow. Apparently, in most males of the species the blood flow is sufficient only to serve one end of the body at a time. Personally, I prefer those whith a well perfused brain over the "southerners".

i said someone's not her - it works perfectly well with me

So whenever I saw the phrase "Vasquez Rocks" I always assumed it was a reference to the character in Aliens. It wasn't until fairly recently that I found out it's an actual place...where they filmed the Gorn Fight, 'cause I'm a Trekkie who pays attention! :techman:
