Could there ever had been a reboot?

As any DS9 fan, finally got to watch the wonderful, emotionally powerful documentary What We Left Behind and I after the spellbinding brainstorming for the first episode of season 8, I was wondering... Could there ever had been a season 8 like that?

Basically, all I know is, just like when I started watching this show as a youngster, I am amazed at the possibilities and endless imagination this show comes with.

The Promenade is so iconic, for any revival to work they'd have to nail it down perfectly. And DS9 was more than extravagant with its sets, which are lush and sublime...
I think it can tolerate some new interior design, but it needs to be a singular physical space. You should be able to see out from Quark's and Odo's office onto the Promenade, and look down on the inhabitants (or the invaders, depending in the story).

I know many people don't like His Way or don't like the Kira-Odo romance, but everything was right about the camera work in this scene. This is why the Promenade is essential.

There needs to be a promenade, but it doesn't need to be identical. There could be damage to the station requiring a renovation in the backstory to explain it. Or in the first reboot episode could begin in the middle of things, with a battle with substantial damage.

No!
No reboot!

I can't stand the thought of any 2010 decade actor impersonating those amazing characters. Please, don't ever mention it again.

If the actors from the original DS9 series would do it, then maybe. And the promenade of course.
Otherwise I would like to see more books about our heroes.

OK, I wasn't thinking of a reboot myself so much as some sort of a revival. DS9 The New Generation? Get a mostly different cast together?

When I said reboot, I really was mostly refering to what they talked about in the documentary. Probably add new characters as well.

One thing I've been saying is that I see no reason why we couldn't have some DS9-centric Short Treks. The shorts are no longer just associated with Discovery, but, with the franchise as a whole now. We know that Pike is getting at least three, there are (I think two) animated ones coming, and one to set up Picard. With that said, why not have some focused on a few DS9 characters? Would they go to the trouble of recreating the promenade for that? Hard to say, but, I think it would absolutely satisfy a craving for more DS9.

IIRC Ira has said he's not interested in returning to DS9 unless he gets to do a full season (presumably a modern short season). He doesn't think a few shorts or even a feature-length would do the show justice.

One of the other key writers from the time period might not have the same attitude however.

He didn't mention it but if he did of course the characters could be recast, every character that has ever been created can be played by countless actors, reinterpreted, changed etc., it's a non issue.

If they did a DS9 continuation, why would CBS even bring back any of the former writers? They didn't do it for Picard.

True. They’re under no obligation to do so.

Generally speaking, we would not count on it. However, ISB definitely planted a flag on future narrative development for DS9 in the documentary. Not bringing back some of those writers would be a contentious issues for fans.

It wasn't contentious with Picard, none of the writers who helped to make him/TNG what it was is involved and it isn't an issue at all. And honestly, ISB planting a flag in some documentary is probably not something CBS cares about, if we get something about DS9 or its characters it would most likely happen within Picard or Lower Decks and those writers would handle it.

It was just the idea of a reboot with new actors which scared me almost to death. I would never watch a reboot where some 2010's lamebrained Miss Goodyeartyrelips would try to portray Jadzia Dax, Ezri Dax or so.

I think it's less of an issue with TNG than DS9 because the most central writer for the entire show (Piller) is dead, and TNG in general had a much higher turnover rate for writers than DS9 did. Those who had long tenures in later TNG and are still well-known - Braga, Menosky, Moore, Echevarria, and Shankar - are mostly showrunners of their own at this point, and it's probably beyond the payscale of CBS to assemble in one room (even if the logistics worked out). And it's not like any one of them was really central to Picard (Moore developed Worf into a real character, but the others were sort of all over the place).

I'd also say that in general DS9 fans tend to be more into the writing, and not just the characters, but that's just my own personal take on it.

Make way for Miranda Cosgrove playing … Luzara Dax!
:guffaw:

Seriously, if she played some new Dax named Luzara in the crappy Discovery, I could possibly live with it. Mostly because I don't watch that series. But I don't want to see her or any similar actress as Jadzia, Ezri, Kira, Leeta or other DS9 character from the fantastic series which this forum is all about.

I'm hoping they come across a new incarnation of Dax in Discovery season 3
900 years in the future and 50,000 light years away

If TNG is eventually rebooted then DS9 seems like a logical next step, but I wouldn't expect either for at least a couple more decades. It took 40 years to get from the last ep of TOS to ST:2009.
