Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

It's amazing work — you've hit all the visual cues of the Reliant while also making it fit in with the '60s Trek style of smooth surfaces and simple lines. And that last pic... :adore:

Looks fantastic! I've always been a bit sceptical about efforts to TOS-ify the Reliant, but here it does look like a completely logical additional to the FJ fleet. I love the TOS detailing around the hull markings and the shuttlebays.

The only thing I'd be curious to see would be a version without the rollbar, and with one of your lovely Saladin-style dishes on the saucer ventral.

But please take a break Donny!

I've worked all day polishing the crap out of this lady and I'm very tired, but I've managed to take the final screenshots before I let my exhaustion take me.

Here she is, the U.S.S Buenos Aires NCC-1660 from the Vanguard series of novels. I originally wanted to go with the Bombay (also from Vanguard), but Prologic9 depicted that specific Miranda with his take and I also wanted to pay tribute to the wonderfully talented @Rekkert, who resides in Buenos Aires ;) A reminder that I went with a very non-greeble approach to her and wanted to stick with the 11-foot Enterprise filming model detialing, therefore I didn't add any visible weapons or gratuitous paneling, relief, or specular variation.

^That's a ball-mounted tractor beam emitter on the rear of the deflector pod, similar to the one I modeled for the TOS Enterprise hangar bay.

Let me know what you think! This certainly was a challenge designing all the details that differentiate it from the TMP Miranda, and trying my hardest to set mine apart from other artists who've taken this project on. I'm happy with most of what I've done, but felt I could've come up with something more interesting for the aft portion of the bottom of the saucer. Anyway, I wanted to wrap her up today so after trying a few different configurations I decided to just go with what I've got.

And with that, I'll just leave this here

;)

She came out great. Totally believable as a TOS era ship. Nice work!

Bloody hell Donny. I can see why texturing / surfacing is what got you your job. This thread goes: Nice nice nice ok not bad that's interesting -- OMG THAT'S AMAZING!

YES I'm jealous, why do you ask?

My supposition about The Wrath of Khan is that there is little indication that The Motion Picture "happened". I would also say (often) that there is little indication that much was meant to have changed between TOS and TWOK. Khan has a TWOK era insignia because TOS looked like TWOK and vice versa. If it "looks different" it's only because you're watching a movie and not real life. (Discovery made this explicit when they did their "Previously on Star Trek" using TOS footage.)

Long winded way of saying that with that last Wrath of Khan homage, you're singing my song!

Looks great! The only thing that bugs me is the pennants on the rollbar pointing sideways. I get the need for there to be something up there, but I feel in my bones that Starfleet arrowheads and racing stripes should always point forward, and the three-stripe pennant would make more sense above the nacelles, like in the refit version. As for what goes on the rollbar... those pylon vents looked pretty sharp on version "B" from a vew pages ago. Or maybe some gray/red outline boxes and yellow blocks, or the registry number, as on the original. Maybe it'd look more TOS-y with the name on the opposite side of the rollbar, but upside-down.

Though looking at that image more, I also want to say how much I love you putting the TOS shuttlebay "meatball" under all your hatches.

lol I was just joking with the name, but it's a nice surprise hahaha, thank you very much for your kind words about my work. :)

Once again you've done the impossible, I now have a TOS ship as my wallpaper (replacing your TMP Enterprise, of all things). It's so full of little details, amazing work. I like that you added a thin separation line on the rollbar, great touch! Also, I can see there's a little sign on the deflector pod, below the pylon connection. Hiding little easter eggs? :p

The only thing that stands out is that there seems to be a double space between "U.S.S." and "Buenos", when compared to the space between "Buenos" and "Aires". Could that be the case, or just my eyes deceiving me?

Whatever you do next, I can't wait to see it, whenever you feel like doing it of course. :)

While I sympathize with this concern, I have to admit I REALLY like the Starfleet arrowheads on top of the roll bar as I have them. I know it's a little confusing them when viewing them from the front, but I like how it looks too much to remove it now. Also, I purposefully did not place similar pennants on the pylons (as with the TMP Miranda) simply because there are already large pennants on the nacelles, and having pennants on both the nacelles and pylons would be a little overkill for my tastes.

On a similar note: regarding placing registries on the roll bar, I also purposefully used restraint when placing registry/names, simply because there are so few places on the TOS Enterprise where we see them, compared to say TMP or TNG ships. If, say, the TOS Enterprise has an "Enterprise" logo near it's hangar bay (as with the TMP Enterprise), then I'd have felt more at liberty to place a "Buenos Aires" below the impulse engine between the hangar bays. But I'm trying very hard to stay similar to the TOS Enterprise in terms of details like that.

Though looking at that image more, I also want to say how much I love you putting the TOS shuttlebay "meatball" under all your hatches.
Are you referring to the green, orange, and red rectangular lights below each hangar hatch?

That's the "Tail Pipe Socket Adjustment Access" label that's on the TOS Enterprise filming model near where the nacelle pylons meet the engineering hull. Figured I needed to include it somewhere ;p

This is what I get when fighting exhaustion and continuing to work on a project. Mistakes like these :brickwall: Yes, you are seeing correctly. I accidentally had a double-space between "U.S.S." and "Buenos" because there's a double-space between "U.S.S." and "Enterprise", but because this is my first double-worded ship name I didn't think to make sure there were either two spaces between "Buenos" and "Aires" or just do single spaces bewtween all three. Dammit. That's going to bug me until I take new renders!

Whatever you do next, I can't wait to see it, whenever you feel like doing it of course. :)
Probably the Antares / Robot Grain ship we saw in TOS Remastered/TAS respectively. But we'll see.

Hey wait (said I in mock irritation) those look a lot like orthographic views!
You'll be pleased to hear that I've done some fiddling this morning and I've successfully found a way to take nice orthographic renders! It will require a bit of setup but I've started a process of bringing everything into Substance Painter when finished (including windows and decals) so I can take high-res, high-quality, well-lit renders from there. Stay tuned!

Yay, I would love to see you build the Antares. I always had a soft spot for the TAS inspired ship designs. :techman:

All right ladies and gents, I need your input.

I've spent the day creating a format for some orthographic views. Here's a rough draft. For each ship, I plan on doing one sheet for each orthographic view, and a perspective view with some general specifications. How do you feel about the layout, color scheme, etc? Ignore the fact that components are listed but don't have guidelines pointing to their respective locations on the ship yet. I will do that once I settle on a format. Also, some of the components listed may or may not make the final cut, nor is the exact nomenclature final.

I'm using the Century Gothic font over others (Microgramma, Schnaubelt) because I feel it's the official font of Starfleet of this era, based on some of the text on the Talos IV document in "Court Martial",

Let me know if you have any feedback!

Something about it itches me. I'm 70% sure it's the gradient backdrop, and that it would feel more TOS as either solid black or solid white, but whether that goes or stays, I'm 100% sure that I'm not a fan of the drop shadows. Also, it's very text-heavy. I don't think the call-outs help, or at least not that many of them all in neat columns.

Very sleek presentation!

I agree with David though, gradients and shadows are so early 2000's. ;) It would look cleaner (and more "official") without those elements IMO.

Sorry. :( It happens, I once had to re-render an entire set of renders because in my haze to finish I accidentally moved my textures one pixel to the right, so they were ever so misaligned. One of those things no one would've noticed, but I knew it was there! XD

Much better IMO. :) I like both of the font versions, no preference from me there.
By the way, isn't the Miranda usually considered a Light Cruiser? I remember the Interplay games at least gave it that designation.
