This is something that I've been thinking about for awhile.

Keogh says in his last moment: "We got what we came for, now let's get out of here!"

Would it have been too much if they showed him sit on the shattered bridge when the Dominion ship is going right at them to say: "All hands... I'm sorry."?

How would that be him getting his due?

Captain of a Galaxy class starship. He could have given his crew a farewell.

I don't see how that's him getting his due. Plus, it's making their last seconds about him, his (unnecessary) apology. They all went into battle together. They knew what they were doing. Keogh did fine.

Although it's one of the rare times two Starfleet officers just didn't like each other, and openly. Wtf happened with Jadzia and him, anyway?

In one of the novels, I can't remember which one, Curzon Dax knew Keogh when he was a Lieutenant. Apparently Curzon walked in on Keogh boning down with a crew member. Keogh got embarrassed and things got worse when Curzon had sex with the same crew member.

I've no idea if that's true or not, which is what makes it so good.

He could have said "Maybe I should have dropped off the children and civilians after all."

They did. No one specifically says, "Get everyone off the ship", but it's clearly implied in the scene where Dax and Keogh have a little friction.

It's clearly the opposite being implied

Why again are we not supposed to like Keogh, and supposed to want him to die?

He was kind of an arrogant jerk. But his (along with his ship) death was a shocker.

I haven't seen the episode in a long time, but I thought that they said that they left non intentionele personel at DS9

Hmm I have to question whether that deserves death as his "due," but thank you for the reply.

DAX: It should take at least that long to offload all the nonessential personnel from the Odyssey. You were planning on doing that, weren't you?
KEOGH: Lieutenant, have you ever thought of serving on a starship?
DAX: I'm happy where I am.

How do you figure? The only thing I can assume is Keogh's response to Dax when she smartasses him. But I can't imagine Keogh keeping them on board just to spite Dax.

After Dax says it should take a few hours to offload all nonessentials, Keogh sets departure for three hours hence.

I agree. Of course Keogh was disembarking nonessential personnel; it seems like a the kind of thing that regulations or general orders would cover before engaging in hostilities. The captain’s invitation for Dax to take up an exciting career in fleet operations was sort of, I don’t know, a joke. Like this:

Sarcasm was not reserved to TOS only.

Yes, because a Starfleet captain wouldn‘t be expected to drop their professionalism and give in to despair, not even in final moments. I think you’ve been inspired by the dramatic license of frozen-Chang and the Duras sisters awaiting their inevitable destruction, but Robert Hewitt Wolfe’s (possibly disputed) thinking behind-the-scenes was that Keogh and the Odyssey were just as good as Picard and the Enterprise, and look how easily the Jem’Hadar won!
