Spidey OUT of MCU

None of that means anything more than that Disney needs more of a share in the partnership, which was always going to be the case anyway because the original deal was overly slanted towards Sony.

These are objections to be negotiated, and if the negotiations don't work then that's life. The suggestion that Disney had no intention of negotiating in any way because they don't really even want Spider-man anymore remains ludicrous and insupportable.

the partnership, such as it was, probably would have been fine if Far From home made 800 million or less.. with it cracking a billion, Disney realized they are making another studio billions of dollars and it's not their movie

Disney can make a billion dollars from Spider-Man merchandise; they simply got greedy and tried to strongarm Sony, who weren't going to play ball, and so Disney walked away from the table, leaving Sony to say "That's fine; we don't need you".

Disney's 50/50 offer was way out of hand.. and both parties knew it. it only makes sense that Disney knew they would be turned down. they wanted to be out of this.

That is because of greed. While I think they can survive without Spidey I think they are underestimating the impact of loosing him and Rogers and Stark. They are 3 years away from the heavy hitters because Phase 4 looks very niche. Jason

Honestly I'm giving it 18 months until the dump truck full of money turns up at Hugh Jackmans door.

It's either gonna be that or Tony Stark getting resurrected because they have lost so many heavyweights hitters at the same time and gone are the days when they could rely on the DC movies being bad.

Funny, since Captain Marvel and Black Panther both just cracked a billion on their first movies and aren't going anywhere, plus Thor is still here (and Hulk and the Guardians). From where I'm sitting Marvel has exactly the same number of heavy hitters they had going into phase 3, even with Spidey gone.

I don't know about that. I think Guardians would count but the star with them is James Gunn. Captain Marvel as a character is boring even though the movie is solid. Everyone in Black Panther seems more interesting than the main character. Both need a Thor like personality transformation to really grow the character. Dr Strange is in the same boat but I guess he only has one more movie left. Deadpool is the only true Michael Jordan on the active roster and they can't even use him the proper way. All potential is in the next phase especially if they get Spidey back. X-Men,Fantastic 4,Guardians,Spidey,Blade,Captain Marvel,Black Panther and Avengers that would be special provided they don't screw up F4 and X-Men. If they miss on Blabe it will bad but you can't screw up maybe your biggest brand names other than Hulk and Spidey. Jason

This hurts the MCU more than Spiderman. Loosing Spidey after Stark and Rogers is a big blow especially for future Avengers movie. They better not mess up on Fantastic 4 and X-Men now. Jason
MCU is on the decline, if only because it's f***ing impossible to top Endgame. As such Disney should have negotiated better. I don't blame Sony for taking their ball and going home. If they lose 25% revenue by not being tied to MCU in any future Spiderman movie, they are still ahead of the game, compared to 50% that Disney wanted.

I can't shake the feeling that Disney/Marvel is starting to become their own enemy.

The first snafu was the issue with Gunn and his postings for which he got fired in a kneejerk reaction by Disney, When that blew up in their face publicly, a far greater black mark on their record than what may have been if they kept on a director who made some distasteful and inappropriate jokes for which he apologized, they upset the well oiled machinery that was the MCU and Guardians 3 was pushed back quite a bit.

Now apparently Disney tried to muscle themselves into a bigger piece of the pie and Sony (in what i assume) in their knowledge that Marvel popularized this new version is probably banking on their ability to keep up the quality and popularity of Holland's Spiderman and this earn the 1 billion+ for themselves.

It seems Disney overestimated their power in this and didn't think that Sony would take a stand and thus upset their own machine. It is far too early to judge this new MCU post Infinity Stone Saga but so far there is little that seems to connect all the planned movies and we don't know if Marvel will even follow the blueprint they had with the first 22 movies by slowly building up the overarching story and main villain.

If not and the movies are mostly self contained with occasional overlaps or teamups it could well be the start of the end as people really do get saturated with Superheroes and something new replaces them (unlikely and probably doomsaying on my part).
I pretty much agree with everything you said. Disney is on top of the world, but it just means their fall would be just that much bigger.

I think this was a negotiating ploy by Disney: leak the breakup, fans go nuts, Sony caves. Parts one and two, check, we'll see on three. But I would bet good money this gets sorted out.

It's interesting if we ever get to the bottom of this. Disney must have known that Sony was not going to accept 50/50 split. Sony has absolutely no reason to do it. They can go on their own make 40% less money compared to if under MCU banner and still be ahead of the game. And if they fail to make good money they can come back to Disney later and start negotiating again. There is absolutely no reason for Sony to accept 50/50 right now. And Disney knows it. So why did they offer it knowing Sony would walk away?

That's not how Disney operates.

See the following:
As for Disney wanting less and coming back to the bargaining table, Bock said it’s simply not in the studio’s nature: “if that's Disney's offer, it's not suddenly going to change to 60/40 or 70/30. The only way I could see it working is if Disney would give up a lot more than that, and I just don't think they're willing to do so. They just play with brass balls. Everybody who's ever dealt with Disney knows that. It's not a secret. They do not budge on anything.”
