The Last Jedi - Actually Widely Hated?

I'm not saying Maverick will be good. I'm not even saying Top Gun..was "good" but it was a film that understood what it was, and what it wanted to be.. just a fun movie form the 80's ... and the trailer for Maverick understands that

But, to the larger point, the problem is back to the audience, they don't want to see anything different. They want to see the same thing with the illusion that it's different.

Tough balancing act, for sure.

You know what convinced me to reject Maverick? The trailer.

I'm going to go see it. I love airplanes and bet the film is going to look spectacular on the big screen.

I don't think the sequel trilogy would've held my attention if it was just another binary good vs. bad story.

Luke "didn't go psycho" either. He made a mistake, a brief moment, that he then stopped. He is much like Kirk in TMP and TWOK. The only difference is Kirk sought to correct his mistake and sought support, while Luke fell in to depression and ran away.

It's all perfectly valid storytelling. Its what I would expect from characters over the course of time.

Exactly so. These films moved from black and white the moment Vader said, "No, I am your father."

a brief moment ? stop with that.. they provide no context for it.. they show it three times.. and the very image of it.. is NOT Luke at all.. it's like..really tone deaf as to the Luke character

and it is just a "more tie fighters.. good guys vs bad guys" with no context as to why the board was reset after the empire fell

No way they were going to tell more political stories after the fallout from the prequel trilogy. Even though I would've loved something that was closer in time to Return... and went into how that galaxy wide celebration was bullshit.

A little off-topic here...

Did they ever do a "Judgement at Nuremberg" style story in the novels or comics?

I have those moments too. Its human.

Luke reacted as all Jedi had before. The Luke thing to do was to pause and reflect rather than follow that reaction.

Sorry, not tone deaf. All it's doing is showing that Luke has flaws, leftover failings of Jedi training. And that's ok.

If that's fair, then along those lines leave those who reject The Last Jedi alone. Fair 'nuff?

Oh. I thought this was a discussion board not a convincing board.

Topic of this thread is whether or not The Last Jedi is widely hated. The answer is, it is. That doesn't invalidate that you like it. Enjoy being in the minority.

Lol.

1. I didn’t bring up Maverick.
2. “Widely” hates isn’t a fact. It’s undefined. That should be what’s discussed. How many is widely? How does one know?

But no. What’s happening is those that don’t like it have to keep repeating why they don’t like it, somehow assuming because there’s a YouTube video, there must be a mass of angry fans who all agree.

Luke aside (this is Luke.. and killing or even thinking about killing his nephew is something he would not do..but whatever) but even the Luke stuff made any coherent sense, it's lodged in a movie that is just filled to the brim with absolute bullshit, every plot feels like a subplot and they are all utter tripe

"It understand what it wants to be, I agree. But freezing it’s main character in the 80s doesn’t interest me." and yet SW is just more tie fighters vs X Wings again with TFA and TLJ providing NO STORY to show why the board was reset.. Disney just wanted the same old same old and they didn't earn it, they didn't build it, they didn't work for it. If these ships were not TIES and X Wings and the falcon no one would care at all .. and the "development of Luke in that 30 year time jump was a joke.

Luke aside (this is Luke.. and killing or even thinking about killing his nephew is something he would not do..but whatever)...

Here's the thing, Luke Skywalker knows his father went down the wrong path and killed millions in the process. That has to haunt him. Knowing that Ben Solo could very well go down that path, and in that moment of nearly killing him, he realized how easily he himself, even in a moment of doing what he thought was "right", could go down that path.

He didn't want to be responsible for more death, he fought his war.

you don't have to explain it. i get what they are trying for. But this is LUKE and he would not do that.. and they did not convince me would.. and ..THAT'S THEIR JOB AS FILMMAKERS. it doesn't help that this plot or subplot or whatever exists in a terrible mess of a movie.. I guess anything is possible when Leia flies through space..

No, actually. The sooner they scrap the Falcon the better.

development of Luke in that 30 year time jump was a joke.
I hope to be like you, then, and not make mistakes in 30 years, and to not need heroes I can identify with. Until then, I shall enjoy a Luke that I can fully identify with, flaws, mistakes and all.

Oh and buy the way you look at Luke at the end of TFA when he gets that lightsaber.. you look at his expression.. tossing the saber.. that's not what he was going to do. No way. in fact the original SCRIPT had floating rocks.. which goes well with the fact that he is wearing Jedi robes. Rian is a huge fucking hack and didn't know what to do to make his cool "let's subvert expectations" idea work, so he had Luke leave.,.. CHANGE OUT OF HIS JEDI ROBES-- before saying his first words "go away" WHAT a fucking garbage movie

They did convince me. I like Luke's character arc. I think the middle of the film, especially the Canto Bight stuff needed work. But overall? I found the movie entertaining, which is what I look for when I go to the theater.
